Do you want to work as a Special Education Assistant or support individuals with a developmental disability in the community? The Classroom and Community Support diploma/certificate program will provide you with the specialized knowledge and skills to help promote the development, education, well-being and citizenship of children and adults with disabilities. This diploma/certificate is part of the laddered Classroom and Community Support department.

Study options

The CCS Diploma consists of 60 credits and can be completed in 4 semesters (2 years) with full-time study.

The CCS Certificate consists of 45 credits and can be completed in 3 semesters (1.5 years) with full-time study.

About 95% of our graduates choose to complete the full diploma as compared to the certificate. Employers prefer diploma graduates and the diploma provides a block transfer into several related university degrees.

Diploma students can also choose to complete a Behavioural Intervention (autism) specialty as part of their studies. See the College Calendar for more information.

Courses

Courses cover advocacy, augmentative and alternative communication, disability issues, inclusive education, employment and behaviour supports, teaching techniques and data gathering, family support, community living,  personal care, interpersonal skills, critical thinking, problem solving and ethical practice. You will take selected courses with students from other programs within the Faculty of Child, Family and Community Studies. For detailed course descriptions, see the College Calendar.

You¿ll complete at least two workplace learning placements, which allow you to gain hands-on knowledge in a community setting. See Worksite learning for more info.

Part-time study/Prior Learning Assessment

The Classroom and Community Support (CCS) program offers two part-time options:

  1. The CCS Part-Time Cohort accepts 10-15 applicants each Fall. Students go through the program together as a group. You must take at least two evening courses in each of the Fall, Winter and Summer semesters.
  1. The CCS Part-Time Flexible Model is for Flex-track students who have received transfer and/or prior learning assessment credits and are completing the program on an individual basis. For more information on the Flex-track option, see the Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition page.

Employment

Employment prospects for graduates of the CCS program are excellent. In fact, many students receive offers of employment before they graduate, and 95% find work within two months of graduation. See the Employment page for more information.
