CCSD 2170: Perspectives on Exceptionalities

Who this course is for:
This course is designed for Coquitlam high school students who are planning on entering a career in:
- early childhood education
- teaching/education assistant
- medicine
- nursing
- social work
- child and youth care
- psychology
- other education, health and human service professions
What you'll study:
Though lectures, guest speakers and group work, you'll investigate the education, health and human service options for disabled children and adults. You'll also discuss the pros and cons of current disability services. Topics of study include:
- early intervention
- inclusive schools
- employment supports
- investigation of various exceptionalities
You'll also get the chance to apply what you learn in class with school-based volunteer experiences. Volunteer hours will be within the school environment with a peer who has extra support needs.
Students should expect 2-3 hours a week of homework. Assignments will include essays, quizzes and projects.
How you get credit:
This is a dual-credit course, which means you'll get credit from your high school as well as from Douglas College. You'll receive four credits from School District 43 and three credits from Douglas College Classroom and Community Support and Child and Youth Care programs.
