Instructor Profiles
Collin Ashton, C.P.P.
Mr. Ashton has over 25 years experience in the Supply Management Profession and has been with Corus Metals Supply Management group for the past 11 years. He has been teaching the PMAC principles courses for 8 years and gains great satisfaction from sharing his knowledge and experience in the classroom.
Wolfgang Beier, C.P.P.
Mr. Beier is a Certified Payroll Professional (C.P.P.) and hold a Diploma of Technology in Operations Management. He has over 20 years of Supply Management experience, and is currently the Purchasing Manager of the City of North Vancouver. He is entering his sixth year of teaching PMAC principles of courses.
Diana Bergmann, B.Ed
Ms. Bergmann has taught at Douglas College in the Office Administration Department since 2001 when she came to the Lower Mainland from Saskatoon. She earned her B.Ed at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, and still has strong ties to her prairie roots. As well as considerable experience as an educator and school administrator, Diana's varied career includes a depth of experience as an office administrator. She lives in New Westminster with her roommate, a year-old Shih Tzu, and is very excited about her teaching role with Douglas College's Veterinary Office & Animal Care certificate program.
Manjit Biring, MBA
Ms. Biring is an insurance professional with over 27 years of experience in the insurance industry. She has instructed on behalf of he Insurance Institute of BC as well as the Insurance Brokers Association of BC and has held various senior positions in a number of well-known organizations. Ms. Biring is a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional and attained her MBA with a specialization Leadership. Currently Ms. Biring works as the Divisional Manager, Technical Knowledge Transfer - Western Canada for Intact Insurance Company.
John Brouwer, CTC, DTTF
Mr. Brouwer's career and education in the travel and tourism industry spans over a period of 30 years. He has been successful in management and consultative work both on the national and international level. His career has taken him on travels around the world enjoying a multitude of varied cultural experiences while developing skills and knowledge in various sectors of the industry such as agencies, airlines and tour operators. Fifteen years ago, following his heart and responding to the labour market demands, Mr. Brouwer combined his knowledge of the industry with his presentation skills and became a tourism instructor. Since then he has continued to educate entry level students in local institutions while sharing his expertise on a national level by delivering seminars & workshops across Canada for the Canadian Institute of Travel Counsellors & Air Canada. In addition to these activities, he has authored and co-authored training manuals for various fields in the travel industry, the latest being the CITC BC Travel Industry Insurance Study Guide for insurance certification. His commitment to life-long education is reflected in his never-ending pursuit to increase his own educational credentials which include instructor level certification for both CITC and IATA programs.
Vanda Cooper, C.P.M.
Ms. Cooper provides payroll related services to businesses assisting with payroll processing, system changes and implementations, training, and process improvements. A member of the CPA since 1989, Ms. Cooper's background includes over 15 years in payroll management.

Tony M. Doig, M.B.A, C.P.P.
Tony has been involved in Supply Management in various roles and capacities for over 20 years holding responsibility for procurement, inventory management, freight and distribution, warehouse management in a variety of organizations. These include private sector in research & development, manufacturing and service industries and public sector, representing municipal, and crown corporations. In his current role of Purchasing Manager with Teleflex Power Systems he is responsible for strategic sourcing and cost reduction utilizing global low cost regions. Tony is past President of the BC Institute of PMAC and has sat on the national board of directors of PMAC. He has been instructing for 15 years for both PMAC and other organizations.
Jack Eastwood
Mr. Eastwood provides consulting services regarding Canadian payroll. He teaches Canadian payroll courses on behalf of the Canadian Payroll Association, the American Payroll Association and at Douglas College. Before retiring, he was Manager, Pay, at Coast Mountain Bus Company Ltd. Mr. Eastwood was a member of the National Board of Directors of the Canadian Payroll Association for nine years and served as Chairman from 1993-1995. He is recognized as a leading expert in the Canadian payroll industry. He is a popular presenter and has travelled extensively throughout Canada and the United States speaking at conferences, seminars, and workshops on a variety of payroll-related topics.

Wayne Hickey
Wayne's career in the insurance industry spans the past 21 years with 18 in the field of Risk Management. Wayne served on numerous industry organizations both provincially and nationally over this period. On the provincial level he was President of the Insurance Institute of Newfoundland, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Risk Management Society and Atlantic Vice-Chair of the Insurance Institute of Canada. He served on the boards of the Adjusters Association, the Insurance Institute of Canada, the National Chartered Insurance Professional Society, the Global Risk Management Institute and the RIMS Canada Council. Wayne created a National Canadian Municipal Forum to facilitate the growth of Risk Management in Canadian municipalities, hosted and chaired the Canadian Risk Management Conference in Newfoundland and teaches evening classes at the Insurance Institute of British Columbia. Wayne received numerous Industry awards including, the Don Stuart Award from the Ontario Risk and Insurance Management Society, the Award of Merit from the Insurance Institute of Canada, and Instructor of the Year from the Insurance Institute of British Columbia. He is currently the Risk Manager for Methanex Corporation in Vancouver.
Carrie Hudson, R.A.H.T.
Carrie graduated from the University College of the Cariboo (now Thompson Rivers University) in 2004. After graduation she worked at Country Grove Veterinary Hospitals in Aldergrove and began teaching "Veterinary Office Assistant" at Vancouver Community College in Abbotsford. She left Aldergrove in 2005 and worked part time at Dewdney Animal Hospital in Maple Ridge. She just completed working on the movie "Dr. Dolittle" for the summer training animals. She specializes in behaviour and nutrition and enjoys teaching others how to train their pets.
Lianne Johnston, C.T.C M.A
Liannes career has spanned more than two decades in the travel trade, working as a travel consultant and travel supervisor for Woodwards and BCAA and recently teaching for public and private postsecondary institutions. Throughout her career she travelled throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific for business and pleasure. Her years of working in the industry and placing students in work practicums have allowed her to stay current with industry demands. Lianne is a Certified Travel Consultant with the Canadian Institute of Travel Counsellors and has just completed her Master of Arts Degree in Leadership and Training from Royal Roads University.
Claire Kavanagh, D.V.M
Dr. Kavanagh graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1982. After practising first in Ontario then in British Columbia, she travelled to Asia and worked in a small animal practice in Hong Kong for many years before returning to Vancouver in 2001. Currently Dr. Kavanagh works part time at The Burnaby New West Central Animal Hospital and also does locum work at other small animal veterinary clinics.
R. Carol Kuzyk, F.C.I.P., C.R.M.
Since beginning her career in the industry in 1974, Ms. Kuzyk has held various positions with major Insurance Brokers including Agency Manager. She has instructed courses for the IIBC including "General Insurance Essentials" for the past five years. She currently holds a Level 3 Licence, is President of the Governing Council of IIBC after serving as Chairperson of its Education and Seminars Committees.
Cathy Laramie, C.P.M.
Ms. Laramie is employed as Team Lead, Employee Services for Vancity Savings Credit Union in Vancouver, BC. Her background encompasses sixteen years experience working in Payroll and HR, focusing mainly on managing payroll, benefits and compensation issues. In addition to teaching the Canadian Payroll Association courses for Douglas College, Ms. Laramie also works as a contractor for the Canadian Payroll Association. She has been a volunteer and member of the Canadian Payroll Association for sixteen years and has served in several roles with the CPA including Chair, Pacific Region.
Joey Lasko C.P.P., MBA
Joey has been involved in Supply Management, Category/Product Managementand Strategic Planning for the past 11 years holding various roles. His current role with Hitfar Concepts Ltd as Director of Product Management has him responsible for managing the teams looking after Procurement, Marketing and Vendor Relations. Joey completed his CPP designation in 2002 and is part of the class of 2005 from Royal Roads University where he obtained his MBA.

Sandra Morrison, C.P.M
Ms. Morrison is employed as Manager of Compensation & Benefits for the City of Coquitlam. Prior to her present position Ms. Morrison was employed as the Vice President of Human Resources and Payroll for Wesbild Holdings Ltd. In addition to teaching the Canadian Payroll Association courses for Douglas College, Ms. Morrison also teaches additional courses for the Canadian Payroll Association as well as presenting the Professional Development Series seminars on behalf of the Canadian Payroll Association. Ms. Morrison holds her Certified Payroll Management designation with the Canadian Payroll Association and has a diploma in Human Resource Management
Maureen O'Higgins, C.P.P.
Ms. O'Higgins has been involved in Materials Management for over 20 years. She has been responsible for procurement, contract negotiations, inventory management, distribution, warehouse management, and freight functions in a variety of different companies spanning private enterprise, government, and charitable organizations. She also has international experience, having spent five years working in Bermuda. While in Bermuda she was instrumental in establishing the purchasing education program and was a co-founder of the Purchasing Management Association of Bermuda. Maureen is an instructor for the PMAC Principles Courses and various seminars.
Lisa Pryce
Working in the Supply Management Field for over 10 years, Ms. Pryce holdsthe Certified Professional Purchaser designation. She has been responsible for procurement, vendor management and contract negotiations for both public and private companies and has experience with both inventory management and ERP systems. She currently holds the position of Contracts Manger for BC Hydro creating strategic initiatives for contract development and responsible for educating the company on procurement policy, procedures, RFP, tender and contract management.
John Schiffer
John Schiffer is owner of Quality Home Inspections Ltd, a multi-inspector company that has been serving clients in the Greater Vancouver region since 1995. John is a Member of CAHPI (BC); he's a Registered Home Inspector, a Nationally Certified Inspector and a Provincially Licensed Inspector. Prior to Home Inspections John's background is in Construction; as General Contractor he has done both new construction and numerous major and minor renovations in homes and small businesses in the Vancouver area. As an inspector John has developed specializations in the areas of Building Envelope Theory and Practices, Indoor Air Quality, Energy Efficiency and Green Building Technology. He has performed thousands of inspections on all types of residential properties for purposes of Pre-purchase, Pre-Listing, New Construction Deficiency, Problem Investigation and Strata Planning.
An experienced speaker, John has been interviewed many times for radio and newspapers and regularly delivers talks at Real Estate Offices and at Home Buyer Seminars.
Janet Schreier, M.Ed
Janet Schreier has taught at Douglas College in the Office Administration Department since 2003. Janet came to Canada in 1992 from Northern Ireland where she grew up on a farm. She had the opportunity to participate in an agricultural exchange program in Australia for one year. As well as considerable experience as an adult educator Janet has worked as a medical secretary to a variety of specialists in Northern Ireland and Vancouver. She has also worked as an Employment Counsellor for five years and has the Employment Counselling Certificate from the University College of the Fraser Valley. Educationally, Janet received the Royal Society of Arts Teacher's Certificate in Office Studies in the UK and earned her M.Ed at Simon Fraser University.
Janet is very excited about her teaching role with Douglas College's Veterinary Office & Animal Care certificate program.
Debra Smith, C.P.M
Ms Smith provides bookkeeping and payroll services to small businesses, as well as delivers the CPA Professional Development Seminars within Canada. A volunteer with the CPA for over 6 years, she has held the position of Pacific Region Vice-Chair/Vancouver Branch Chair and is currently a member of the Canadian Payroll Association?s National Board of Directors.
Syd Stowe, C.P.P.
With over 20 years experience in the Purchasing Profession and having attained his purchasing certification in 1997, Syd has been instructing the Principles of Quality course for five years and has recently taught the Principles of Transportation and Logistics course. Syd is a Board member of Purchasing Managements Association of Canada's BC Institute and is President of the Vancouver Regional Branch.
Lynn K. Sugden M.B.A. FCMA
Lynn is a member of Grant Macewan College¿s faculty and teaches within the Supply Chain Management major of the Bachelor of Commerce program. His area of interest is strategy formulation and implementation including the metrics needed to support an organization¿s endeavors. Lynn has over 25 years experience in curriculum design and delivery in a variety of environments. He has recently completed three projects entitled: Environmentally Restorative Practice in a Market Economy, Aligning Performance Measures in a Changing World, and Alternative Methods of Curriculum Delivery.
Wayne Verge, B. Comm, CPM
Mr. Verge has been working in the Payroll industry for over 15 years. He is currently a System Implementation Consultant with Ceridian Canada. He discovered his passion for teaching many years ago, and most recently taught the CPA Payroll courses at Surrey College. His experience comes from the government, hospital, university and entertainment industries
Jan Werger, R.A.H.T.
Ms. Werger graduated with honours from Thompson Rivers University (formarly U.C.C) in 1996. After graduation she joined the team at the Granville Island Veterinary Hospital in Vancouver, under the direction of Board Certified surgeon, Dr. Dennis Jackson. In 1998 Jan joined with Dr. Leah Montgomery's team at the Shaughnessy Veterinary Hospital in Port Coquitlam where she is still enjoying the daily challanges of small animal practice.
