Community Resources
(Mandatory if you have less than one year of direct employment counselling experience.)
This course provides inexperienced practitioners with a solid foundation and understanding of community resources and the roles various funded agencies, government departments and professional associations play in providing services for individuals seeking career and employment counselling. Topics to be covered include: criteria for funding of programs; role of the Ministry of Human Resources; role of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC); role of employers; income assistance clients; EI clients; reach back clients; Guidelines and Standards for Career Practitioners in Canada; and the role of the Blueprint for Life Design for clients. This course will provide the background you need to be able to successfully handle the other courses in the program and to be an effective career and employment counsellor.

Introduction To Career And Employment Counselling
(Mandatory if you have less than one year of direct employment counselling experience.)
Introduction to Career and Employment Counselling is designed specifically for individuals who may not have the required related work/volunteer experience to enter directly into the Career Development Practitioner Certificate Program.
The course will be helpful if you work in social service and human resource jobs, as well as for staff who work in program support areas in employment and career agencies. This course will help you in developing the practical skills necessary to assist people in obtaining employment and improve your communication skills in this area. You will have an opportunity to examine the social and psychological effects of unemployment. The focus of the course is on effective career and employment counselling techniques, job search strategies, the role of the career/employment practitioner, communication skills, motivating clients, empowerment and change.
