"I'm looking forward to putting my new knowledge into practice." - CDP Summer Institute Student
When the Metis Nation BC required a customized training program for new regional career development practitioners in their employment centres they asked Douglas College. A Career Development Practitioner (CDP) Summer Institute was designed by continuing education, Faculty of Child, Family and Community Studies (CFCS) to fit their needs. Three courses of the part-time Career Development Practitioner Certificate Program (CDP) were offered. Marlin Ratch, the Metis Nation BC Regional Development Coordinator, had a goal to sponsor seven employees to complete the requirements for the CDP Certificate. Seven employees were located in Ft St John, Prince George, Dawson Creek and Quesnel BC. The solution was to bring them to Douglas College for two weeks in July 2005 to take three courses towards their certificate. "The students were ready to learn" commented instructor Duncan Lambier. CDP instructors Duncan and John Saremba led the students through interactive classroom instruction, computer labs, library orientation, the First Nations Centre and several field trips. The entire College community contributed to this meaningful learning experience. The cafeteria became a welcoming environment and the students raved about its friendly staff - and good food of course! Students bought Douglas College T-shirts and branded accessories for their family and friends back home. At the closing ceremony the students showed their appreciation and presented John and Duncan ceremonial Metis sashes. "Plans are underway for students to complete their studies at Douglas College and earn a CDP certificate" commented CFCS continuing education faculty, Cheryl Jeffs. This creative and flexible program design is a great example of how Douglas College can meet the needs of the community.
