Choirs and Bands

Concert Band

This group rehearses and performs intermediate to advanced repertoire in a variety of musical styles. Thursday rehearsals focus on preparing repertoire for public performances. Community members are also welcome to attend rehearsals, which include sight reading, technique and additional repertoire work. Admission to this band is by audition, and is based on available seats. Ensembles can be taken for credit, audit, or through the Community Music School.

For more information, please call Blair Fisher at 604-527-5272.  The band is not available during Spring and Summer semesters.  Concert Band will resume in the Fall term.

Dues Jazz Band

The Dues Band is a large jazz ensemble that performs classics from the jazz tradition along with more modern material. Intermediate-level jazz players are welcome. Tuesday rehearsals focus on preparing repertoire for public performances. Community members are also welcome to attend Thursday (2-4pm) rehearsals, which include improvisation, technique and listening work.

Admission to this band is by audition, and is based on available seats. Ensembles can be taken for credit, audit, or through the Community Music School. MIDI Electronic Music Ensemble

Through the use of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), students will experience the creative and performance possibilities of electronic, MIDI-capable instruments (keyboard, mallet, woodwind, guitar, vocal, and drums available [theremin pending]). The ensemble will study pieces varying in style and scale. This course will emphasize the capabilities of modern electronic instruments through performance applications. Essential principles of ensemble playing will be discussed in a unique way, combining both performance technique and digital sound design. For more information call 604-527-5469.

Percussion Ensemble

This class is designed for percussion students enrolled in the University Transfer program at Douglas College. However, if other students have prior ability with rudiments and scales, they may be able to register for this ensemble. Knowledge of snare drum rudiments, and both major and minor scales is recommended. An audition is required. Repertoire will include classical percussion music and ethnic percussion.
