Summer Camps

Soar into summer with Douglas College's Summer Music Camps.  Learn new skills, make new friends and have lots of fun! All camps are held at Douglas College's New Westminster Campus, just up the hill from the New Westminster SkyTrain Station and at Coquitlam Campus, near Coquitlam Centre Mall.

NEW WESTMINSTER CAMPUS--700 ROYAL AVENUE

 

Digital Audio and Video
Learn how a digital studio functions an how some of the audio effects that are heard on current popular songs are achieved.  Record your own songs and shoot digital video to accopany your music.  The only pre-requisite is your creativity!
Fee:                           $180 per week; please select a morning session or an afternoon session

Guitar Camp
Guitar camp is a great way to have fun and learn new guitar skills. Topics covered include strumming and picking patterns for popular music, learning nifty rhythms, reading modern music and making cool improvised solos. Students will also learn about basic theoretical rudiments in an enjoyable conversational style. No prior experience in music is required. All guitars are acceptable; however, an acoustic or classical is preferred. Electric guitars will not be amplified for class.

Glee Camp, presented by Glee Camp Vancouver and Douglas College Community Music School
A Glee Club is a group (usually in high school or college) that gets together to sing.  This camp will focus on putting together a performance in the style of the television show "Glee".  The emphasis will be on popular songs, group vocal harmonies, movement, staging and fun, fun, fun!

School of Rock
Get a taste of the rock 'n' roll life at the School of Rock. You'll learn rock guitar, bass, keyboard, drum and/or vocals from professional musicians, play with your peers and perform as a rock group.

SoundTrax Express--Create Your Own Music!
SoundTrax Expres connects "guitar band" and "garage band".  The guitar band will feature a multi-level ensemble of guitars and world instruments playing a range of music from classic rock to current popular music.  Projects will include live recording, mixing, and film socring short segments of movies.  Hop aboard the SoundTraxExpress!

Summer Jazz Intensive
This is a concentrated course in the performance of jazz and related styles of music. The focus of the camp is soloing, improvisation and learning jazz literature. Jazz activities include improvisation coaching, combos, big band, jazz theory, concerts and master classes, as well as live student performances at local jazz clubs.

World Drumming Workshop
Fun, high-energy week of drumming!  Learn to play the rhythms of West Africa, Cuba, and Brazil.  No experience necessary.  All instruments provided.  Just bring your enthusiasm and energy!

COQUITLAM CAMPUS--1250 PINETREE WAY

Beginner Acoustic Guitar Camp
Have fun while learning the basics of acoustic guitar playing.  Topics covered will include proper playing position, tuning, basic guitar chords, reading guitar tablature, playing with others, and playing simple songs.

Children will explore music through songs, body percussion and movement.  Children will develop their musical ear and sense of rhythm.

Rock Guitar School
Turn it up to 11 for this engaging course!  Students will develop an understanding of how to play the guiatr in a rock context while learning songs and riffs from their favourite bands.  Electric and acoustic guiars are welcomed.

Ukelele Camp
Have fun while learning to play this amazin hawaiian instrument.  Students will learn how to tune the ukulele, how to strum with strong rhythm and how to play a handful of basic songs.

Maria Cristina Fantini-Wells - Voice & Kodaly/ Orff
Soprano Maria-Cristina Fantini, M.Mus. is a classically trained singer whose versatility has led her to an eclectic variety of projects and styles. Maria Cristina began studying voice at age 13 and attended high school at Etobicoke School of the Arts where she specialized in Music Theatre.  Upon graduation she enrolled in the Resident A.R.C.T program at the Glenn Gould Professional School of the Royal Conservatory of Music. Next she attended York University where she completed a Bachelor of Music Degree. While a student at York she formed the progressive folk duo in blue river performing consistently throughout Toronto as well as on local television and radio. Upon graduation she relocated to Vancouver where she earned a Masters of Operatic Performance degree at the University of British Columbia. At UBC she performed several roles including the First Lady in Die Zauberflüte and the lead role in The Merry Widow. She has been active in the opera community since graduating performing the role of Blondchen in Opera Nuova's 2004 production of Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail and chorister in Vancouver Opera's 2006 production of Gounod's Faust.  An affiliate of the R.C.M., she continues to prepare students for exams, competitions, and recitals. She enjoys teaching in a variety of styles including pop, rock, musical theatre, and classical. Maria-Cristina works with her students on increasing range, refining tone, and acquiring vocal flexibility. She has helped many singers overcome vocal tension and other voice problems.  She has taught private singing lessons to students of all ages and levels throughout her career and is always eager to help others on their musical journey.  Also, Maria-Cristina is a Children's Music Educator trained in both Orff & Kodály methods.

Stanton Jack - Guitar
Stanton C. Jack is one of the new generation of Canadian classical guitarists. He combines technical excellence with musical sensitivity, expressed through the uniquely rich and varied tonal language of the guitar. Recent highlights have included his dynamic performance of the famous Rodrigo Concerto de Aranjuez with the UBC Sinfonietta and many concerts with the UBC Guitar Quartet. CD releases include Soul of the Guitar and Stanton C. Jack and Friends. His solo concert repertoire ranges from the Baroque suites of J.S. Bach and S.L. Weiss to the folkloric inspired music of Spain, South America and Africa.
Stanton's academic studies began at Capilano College where he studied guitar with Stephen Boswell. At UBC, Stanton was a teaching assistant for the Guitar Division and completed his Masters of Music degree in Guitar Performance in 2006 after studies with Michael Strutt. He has attended master classes with the world famous virtuoso Pepe Romero as well as William Kanengiser of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. Now a successful educator himself, he combines a busy career of teaching, solo and chamber music performance and recording.

Mark Johnson - Kodaly, Composition, Theory, Guitar, Piano, Voice
Mark Johnson received his graduate diploma in Kodaly education and expert instruction in Orff from the University of Calgary.  Also, he earned a Masters of Composition and teaches composition, theory, guitar, piano, and voice.  With his vocal duo, he has performed jazz standards and his jazz-flavoured compositions in a variety of venues.  Mark's musical interest are wide-ranging; he gave a paper on John Adams at Cambridge University and on Duke Ellington at McGill University.  He has mentored young composers in idioms ranging from socially-conscious rap, film scoring, to contemporary media soundscapes.

Joel Noftle- Digital Audio & Video; Piano
Joel has performed and toured extensively in the public school system with various school ensembles, including the Digital Guise. Recently, he has taught music technology and piano at the Kamloops Interior Summer School. Joel currently teaches piano and produces video and audio projects out of his home studio in Abbotsford.

Bob Rebagliati - Director, Summer Jazz Intensive
For over 35 years, Bob has directed many award-winning school jazz ensembles. "Mr. Reb" is also very active as a jazz guest director, ensemble clinician and adjudicator across Canada. He has played piano or drums in various dance bands around the Vancouver area for many years.

Devon Wells - Banjo & Guitar 
Devon Wells is an accomplished multi-instumentalist based in Vancouver, B.C.. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Devon has been performing from a young. He earned a Bachelors Degree in music at York University. Some of his recent projects include the Leo Award winning short film The Beast of Dulle Griet as well as playing banjo for local bluegrass quartet The Tishomingo String Band and touring the United States as a banjo/electric guitar player for Nettwerk recording artists The Clumsy Lovers.  Devon has been teaching private music lessons on guitar and 5-string banjo lessons tailored to the student. He is comfortable teaching a variety of styles on the guitar including bluegrass, rock, folk, blues, and can help students with sight reading, ear training and theory. On banjo, Devon teaches 3 finger style. He likes the help beginning banjo pickers develop the avility to play with others and show more advanced students possibilities outside of the basic Scruggs style,

Sara Zacharias - Voice & Musical Theatre
Aiming to create new jazz converts wherever she appears, Sara Zacharias brings a special energy, a connection to her audience and her own theatrical jazz style that she marries to her bluesy, honey-toned vocals.
You may recognize Sara Zacharias from local jazz venues, past and present, such as Rossini¿s, the Ouisi Bistro, Opus Bar, Katz Lounge, the Purple Onion and Monk McQueen¿s. Her credits also include the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Royal City Jazz Festival, Festival Vancouver, the Orpheum¿s 75th Anniversary Celebrations, Jazz It Up for the Cure ¿ an annual fundraiser for breast cancer --, Arthur Erickson¿s Fundraiser for the Aids Memorial, and, of course, the Adoptive Families Association of B.C.¿s past four annual Jazz in the Park fundraisers. Sara occasionally breaks away from jazz and plays principal roles in local musical theatre productions, such as Ethel in TUTS¿s ¿Footloose¿, Annabel Glick in Triptych¿s ¿Lucky Stiff¿ and Carla in Applause Musical¿s ¿Nine¿.  Sara completed  her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at Capilano University. Her areas of expertise include vocal technique, lyric interpretation, working with an accompanist/band, ear training/harmony, chart preparation/transposition and stage performance in Jazz, Musical Theatre and Contemporary styles.
