Your Skills
Do you have a story to tell - something to say?
As a Creative Writing student, you'll explore your own "voice" as a writer and hone your writing skills. Classes focus on developing content and refining writing style, not on studying the basics of English composition.
There are many choices, with specialized courses exploring poetry, personal narrative, fiction and screenwriting. All classes are conducted as writing workshops - in which student work forms the basis of discussion and students participate in critiquing each other's work. Gaining new insights as a writer will be useful in all your academic writing in college and university. As you successfully complete Creative Writing courses, you will gain or enhance the following skills:
- evaluate the strengths and weaknesses in written works
- give and receive criticism regarding written work
- better evaluate and revise your own written work
- complete a greater variety of writing that meets specific standards
- identify material from your own experiences to make your writing more authentic
- develop time management skills to help you set and meet deadlines
- demonstrate respectful conduct that is appropriate for the harmonious and optimum functioning of a small group
- better understand your own writing voice in both academic and non-academic writing
