Correctional Officer

Correctional Officers work in the provincial and federal prisons. Duties and qualifications vary depending jurisdiction. The general duties of a correctional officer are:

  • Security (including motor and foot patrols, staffing control poses, counting and escorting offenders, searching for contraband, and emergency response)
  • Assisting offenders, observing behavior and interacting in a meaningful way
  • Working with Case Management Officers to set up and implement correctional plans

Qualifications of Correctional Officers are as follows:

  • Canadian Citizen
  • Knowledge of English or English and French languages
  • Post secondary education in a related field
  • Experience working with the public
  • Motivation to work with offenders
  • Flexibility to be team players
  • Tolerance to adapt to demanding work environment
