Family Justice Counsellors
Family Justice Counsellors work out of probation offices around the province, and are employed by the Corrections Branch of the Ministry of Attorney General. They also spend a large portion of their time traveling to make home visits, attend court, and meeting with other professionals.
Duties that Family Justice Counsellors may perform include:
- Assisting families with mediation and conciliation services
- Providing information on legal issues such as custody, access, maintenance and guardianship
- Assisting clients with applications to Provincial Court for access, maintenance, custody and guardianship
- Assisting clients with the enforcement and variations of these orders
- Preparing custody and access reports for the court
Qualifications for Family Justice Counsellors may include:
- Minimum age of 19 years
- Canadian citizenship
- Criminal record check
- Background check
- Fingerprinting
- Successful completion of the Employment Readiness Program
- University degree in a related field OR two years of college study PLUS five years of experience
- Writing skills must be at Level 5 on the Language Proficiency Index
In addition, preferred credentials include:
- Work experience with families, transition houses, victim services, community work programs or corrections work
- Volunteer experience in social work, family services, transition houses, victim services or with youth
- Counselling skills
- Conflict Resolution and Mediation skills
- Ability to look at complex issues in an objective manner
- Ability to work with families in transition
