Immigration Officer
Immigration Officers in Canada are divided between two different branches: The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and The International Region of Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Officers with the Department of Foreign Affairs will likely work mostly in Canada, where International Regional Officers (officers with the International Region of Citizenship and Immigration Canada) will likely spend two-thirds of their time working in another country.
Officers with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade may perform the following duties:
- Drafting legislation and refugee policies
- Preparation of reports for the Minister of Foreign Affairs and senior management on current immigration issues
- Liaison with media, general public and other departments
International Region Officers duties include:
- Interviews with applicants for business immigration, refugees, visitors, students and temporary workers
- Liaison with other missions concerning immigration policy issues and procedures
- Visit airports to verify travel documents
- Monitor and report on immigration related issues
- Supervise locally engaged immigration staff and other administration duties
Although the two branches of government splits the duties regarding each of the positions, each have the same qualifications:
- Canadian citizen
- Master's degree in a related field or Law degree or two Bachelor's degrees
- Working knowledge of two languages (a third is an asset)
- Successful completion of qualifying exams and interviews
- Security clearance
International Region Officers will have the following additional requirements:
- Medically certified to work anywhere in the world
- Physically able to relocate to anywhere in world
