Lawyers most often specialize in specific areas of the law such as criminal, corporate/commercial, tax, family or personal injury. Their duties therefore depend on the specific area in which they are trained. Those interested in law as a profession must have the following qualifications:

  • Ready and willing to undertake challenging legal work and accept responsibility for successful work
  • Committed to meeting the legal needs of the client
  • Value teamwork
  • Adaptable to different situations and work environments
  • Demonstrate fairness, courtesy and sensitivity

The above qualifications are in addition to the educational qualifications that all lawyers must have:

  • Post secondary education in a related field
  • Successful completion of the LSAT
  • Acceptance and completion of law school
  • Successful completion of the Canadian Bar Exam
  • One year articling experience
