Do you want to find out more about Developmental Studies (DVST)? The following list provides answers to Frequently Asked Questions about DVST at Douglas College.

What kind of courses do you offer?

We offer courses in academic study skills, reading and writing as well as math.

How do I know what level of course I should enrol in?

Because we offer courses that range from literacy to college prep, you will need to do an assessment. This assessment will help us to place you in the course that is right for you.

How can I find out about doing an assessment?

There are staff on both Douglas College campuses who can help you and can book an assessment time for you. (See below.)

Do I need to study for the assessment?

You don't need to study for any of the assessments, but there are practice tests available for math. You can pick them up at the Developmental Education offices at the New Westminster Campus, Room 4200, and the David Lam Campus, Room B2004, or you can use the following links: Algebra Assessment, Basic Math Assessment.

How much do DVST courses cost?

Now you have the exciting opportunity to upgrade your skills with Developmental Studies courses at Douglas College -- without paying any tuition fees.

Funded by the Provincial Government, this opportunity is available to BC residents who have been out of the workforce for a while, or for those seeking to get ahead on the job or change a new career. (The free tuition option is available for reading, writing and math upgrade courses but not for English as a Second Language courses.)

The free-tuition program is available you regardless if you completed high school graduation or did not.

For some courses you may be required to buy a course pack of materials, but any textbooks you need are available through the library on a semester loan.

I know that I am not ready to write a college-level term paper. Is there a DVST course to help me?

Yes, you should book an assessment. (See below.)

I took the Douglas College Writing and Math Assessments and they sent me to DVST. I already have grade 12 so what does this mean?

Like you, most students in DVST have their grade 12, but aren't ready to take university-level courses or to start in a diploma program. In addition, if you have not used your skills for a while, they may be rusty.

I want to take a Douglas College business course and it says I need Math 11. Can I get it from DVST?

Yes, DVST 0410 satisfies the Math 11 prerequisite for courses in the Business Department. If you need Math 11 for other purposes, DVST 0411 satisfies this requirement.

Can my completed DVST courses be transferred towards credits at university?

You will earn College credits for DVST courses, but they cannot be transferred for university credits.
