Economics
Melissa Sigouin says starting with University Transfer courses at Douglas allowed her to build her confidence before heading to SFU to complete her BBA. Read more...
Economics is in everything we do. From discussing the current state of the economy to estimating the costs and benefits of government programs and business management decisions, economics is a part of our every-day conversations, decisions and jobs. Economics is a social science that cuts to the core of decision-making in business and in life.
If you want to be involved at the policy level in government or business, where the really important decisions are made - studying economics is a great choice for you.
But no matter what your career plans are, an understanding of economics goes a long way towards your understanding of the world. Knowing about economics can help you make the most out of your career and your personal finances.
How does Air Canada decide how many seats it will sell at what price? How does the government decide who should pay taxes and how much? How should government programs be designed? How do you decide where to go school and what to study?
It all comes down to economics.
University-transferable diploma programs
The Economics program at Douglas College offers two distinct university-transferable diploma options: the Commerce & Business Administration University Transfer Diploma Program and the Associate of Arts Degree (Specialty in Economics). These are the only two programs at Douglas specifically designed to meet the lower-level (1st and 2nd year) requirements for Bachelor's Degrees in Commerce, Business Administration or Economics at BC universities. For more information, see University Transfer.
Dual admission with SFU
If you choose to study Economics (or other Social Science and Arts courses), you can now register and take courses at both Douglas College and SFU at the same time with the Douglas College/SFU Degree Partnership program. For the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration, this only applies to the Associate of Arts Degree (Economics Specialty). To find out more, see Douglas College/SFU Degree Partnership Program.
Great teachers
"Economics is about every-day life issues like production
and distribution of your breakfast.
Someone knew you wanted bacon and eggs.
They farmed it, distributed it and made sure it was available at your
supermarket for a price you were willing to pay. That's economics in action." -
Rod Midgley, Economics Instructor
Our economics instructors have experience in the classroom and the boardroom. They strive to bring the subject to life. You won't just learn economic theory; you'll learn how to apply it to your work and your life. See Contact Us/Faculty for more information on our instructors.
Co-operative education
Both diploma programs allow students to participate in the Co-operative Education program. Co-op education allows you to gain full-time, paid experience in your field of study while still in school. This is a great way to use your diploma to transition directly into your new career in the public or private sector.
