Prepare for entry into the Faculty of Health Sciences at Douglas College or upgrade your English language skills to improve your employment prospects in the field of health care in Canada!
What is Academic Health Care Foundations?
- Specialized preparation for ESL learners interested in careers in health care
- One semester of full time study (16 hours/week of classes for 13.5 weeks)
- EASL 0810 (6 credits)
Academic Health Care Listening and Speaking Communication Skills for Students of English as a Second Language - EASL 0820 (6 credits)
Academic Health Care Reading and Composition Skills for Students of English as a Second Language
- EASL 0810 (6 credits)
- Classes will be held at the David Lam Campus of Douglas College in Coquitlam
What will I do in Academic Health Care Foundations?
- Focus on and improve your pronunciation, presentation skills, and ability to interact with others effectively in English within the Canadian health care culture
- Improve and practice your skills in understanding, taking notes on, and being able to recall college lectures in the health care field
- Understand, improve, and practice university level academic research and writing skills
- Focus on and improve your ability to understand and recall difficult textbook reading material from the health care field
Where can I go after completing Academic Health Care Foundations?
- ESL students who successfully complete EASL 0820 as part of Academic Health Care Foundations will meet the English requirement for programs and courses in the Faculty of Health Sciences as well as the general admission English language proficiency requirement for Douglas College.

- Note: This preparation program is designed for high intermediate to advanced ESL learners (CLB level 7/8). Present Douglas College ESL students must have Mastery in EASL 0350 and 0360 for entry into Academic Health Care Foundations.
