Expectations of Students
| Douglas College will not be offering the Explore program in 2012. |
The Explore program at Douglas College is a total immersion program, and, like other immersion programs, requires your wholehearted commitment. Are you ready to make the personal adjustments necessary to succeed in this program? Before signing the participant contract, please read the requirements below carefully.
To be successful, you will need to:
- Take an active role in your learning by speaking English whenever on campus and when off-campus with program activities. Speaking languages other than English during this program will slow not only your progress, but that of the other participants. Breaking this rule can result in you being required to leave the program, failing your course, and not receiving a certificate.
- Attend every class, workshop and required activity and be sure to arrive on time (this means after coffee break as well as the start of each class or workshop).
- Complete all homework. Just as attendance is important, completion of assignments and homework is important. What you have learned during a class will be reinforced with homework. If you have not completed your homework, you will not be able to fully participate in class.
- Be respectful of others. Most students come with the intention of keeping the pledge to use English only. Each student has particular reasons or goals for wanting to improve his or her English. It might be for travel purposes, further studies in English, for employment or personal reasons. Please do not undermine their progress by breaking the pledge. We are a diverse community and respectful of ethnic, cultural, gender, religious, or sexual differences.
- Respect program and College policies. We will review policies related to the use of cell phones and electronic dictionaries, attendance, lateness, and homework. You will also be expected to adhere to College policies as outlined on the College web site. These are the same types of expectations your own institution has of you.
