Academic Program

ESL

Douglas College academic ESL courses are designed to help language learners meet their academic goals. For many new Canadians and international students, this means building English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to the level needed to succeed in post-secondary education in Canada.

ESL courses at Douglas College are most appropriate for intermediate and advanced EASL students.

Your commitment

ESL academic preparation courses call for a high level of commitment from students. In class, students work intensively alone, with the instructor, with partners, in small groups and as a large group. Students are expected to do extensive homework assignments in preparation for each class. Instructors guide the student through the learning activities, support and encourage them and evaluate their development.

Instructors use a variety of up-to-date teaching methods. All teaching faculty members are experienced professionals.

Course schedule

Academic preparation courses usually meet either four or eight hours per week. Classes are offered in the morning, afternoon and evening time blocks. Full-time students typically attend 16 hours of classes each week.
