Welcome to the English Department

Courses in the English Department are about being observant and reflective readers and writers, thinkers and researchers. In other words, we teach core skills for a comprehensive college education. Educating students to respond with a breadth of knowledge and a disciplined imagination to the ideas of others is part of the English Department's larger commitment to a liberal arts education, whose aim, we like to say, is the creation of the thoughtful and engaged citizen.

Courses in Composition

We offer three writing courses. Our preparatory composition course reviews the basics of written communication in a small class setting. The Department's first-year academic writing course prepares students to write well and research effectively across their college and university courses. Instructors use readings that model writing and research and are carefully chosen to foster classroom dialogue. Our advanced course offers a focused study of composition theory and practice.

Courses in Literature

Faculty in the English Department strive to instill a lasting appreciation of the rich heritage of literatures in English by introducing students to the transformative power of the well-ordered poem, novel, or play. As well as learning about the intricacies of these art forms, students discover the historical, cultural, and philosophical backgrounds of literary art, and acquaint themselves with literary criticism. Our first-year offerings are notably varied, while upper-level courses offer further and more narrowly focused study. We look forward to introducing you to one of the most popular academic disciplines in North America.

From our academic scholarships to our very accessible faculty, our Department is committed to recognizing and encouraging student excellence.
