Associate of Arts Degree
Why Consider an Associate of Arts Degree?
An Associate of Arts Degree is a university transferable academic credential awarded to students upon successful completion of 60 university transferable credits. In most cases, students transferring to a university can enter the third year of a four-year bachelor's degree.
Advantages of the Associate of Arts Degree credential:
- Many universities (eg, SFU) will accept students with an Associate of Arts Degree at a lower grade point average than students without such a degree.
- Some Associate of Arts degree programs (eg, Limited Enrolment Program, Future Teachers programs) provide students with priority registration at Douglas College.
- Completing an Associate degree may enhance students' employability.
Where Does English Fit In?
Every Associate of Arts degree requires six (6) first-year English credits, and may involve second-year English courses in fulfillment of the Arts requirement.
Students may choose to complete an Associate of Arts (English) degree. The requirements for an AA with a specialization in English, to be completed in combination with the general AA requirements, are as follows:
- A total of 60 credits (as for any Associate of Arts degree)
- At least 18 credits in English
- At least nine (9) credits in English at the second- or third-year level
Students completing an Associate of Arts in Women's Studies and Gender Relations will also incorporate English into their studies. See a full list of requirements in the official College Calendar.
Those who plan to go on to complete a Bachelor's degree in English may also consider the Flexible Pre-Major option.
Students planning to complete an Associate of Arts in English and/or an English Flexible Pre-Major should download and print an English Course Planner to ensure completion of the appropriate credits.
Note: You must be able to view PDF files in order to access the English Course Planner.
Associate of Arts Open Enrolment Program
The open enrolment program is intended for students who want to work at their own pace and, ultimately, transfer to university to complete a bachelor's degree in a particular discipline within Arts (eg, Anthropology, English, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, etc).
Associate of Arts Degree (Limited Enrolment Program)
The Limited Enrolment Program is intended for students entering directly from Grade 12 in the Fall semester following high school graduation. It provides students with priority registration for courses. Get the complete list of admission requirements in the official College Calendar.
Associate of Arts Degree (Future Teachers)
The Associate of Arts for Future Teachers Degree is intended for students (a) entering from Grade 12 or (b) entering from college after completing a minimum of 12 credits of university transfer courses. Students in this program will be able to complete two years of university transfer courses at Douglas College, including first and second year courses that are required by SFU's Professional Development Program for Teachers. See the SFU PDP admission requirements for details. The deadline for applications is May 1.
