Awards and Scholarships

Douglas College offers specialized scholarships and awards to students in the English Deparment.

First Year

Essay Prize in Academic Writing: In Honour of Bill Main

This prize celebrates excellence in writing, including argumentation, style and mechanics, integration and documentation of sources and appropriate formatting. The prize goes to the essay deemed the best overall among those submitted in Academic Writing (ENGL 1130) in each academic year (May through April).

Susan Wasserman Canadian Literature Scholarship

This award was established by Susan Wasserman upon her retirement in 2010, after nearly three decades of teaching in the Douglas College English Department. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a student in any program who meets the following criteria:

  • The top student in English 1101: Studies in Canadian Literature within the previous Winter, Fall, or Summer semester
  • Has a minimum GPA of 3.5 in English courses taken

How to Apply:

  • No applications are necessary. Students will be nominated by their Canadian Literature instructors

Second Year

Ken McGlinchey English Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student who has completed at least two first-year university-transferable English courses at Douglas College, is currently enrolled in a second-year English course and has a cumulative GPA at Douglas of at least 3.5. Preference is given to those who have completed, or are currently enrolled in, a Canadian Literature course.

Sally Allan Memorial Award

This award was created in memory of Sally Allan, a former Douglas College student, by her daughters. The purpose of this annual fund is to provide an award to students in the English Program. Criteria for eligibility include

  • Mature student status (visit DC Calendar for definition)
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Preference will be given to students with a disability

Sylvia Perry English Studies Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student who has completed at least two first-year university-transferable English courses and one second-year English course at Douglas College, and who has an average GPA in these English courses of at least 3.5. The prize is awarded to the applicant with the highest GPA in the required courses.

How to apply: 

  • Student nominate themselves for this prize by forwarding their name and student number to the English Department Chair.
Deadlines:
  • December 31 if the second-year course is completed in Summer or Fall;
  • April 30 if the second-year course is completed in Winter.
