University Transfer
New: Upper-Level Courses
The English Department now offers third-year courses. These courses provide students in a wide variety of programs with increased choices for upper-division Arts electives. They also offer students planning to go on to complete an English degree an opportunity to start their third-year studies while still enjoying the lower tuition and smaller class sizes at Douglas.
Please note that for each new course, transfer (articulation) information will be posted to the website of the BC Council on Admissions and Transfer (BCCAT) as soon as it becomes available. If you are waiting for results on transfer credit, please proceed with registration to ensure your seat, and check back with the BCCAT website weekly. You may also contact the department chair if you have questions about transfer or course equivalency: contact Janet Allwork by phone (604-527-5295) or email (allworkj@douglas.bc.ca).
If you want to transfer to an English major at university, Douglas College offers you multiple ways to get there.
Transfer Credits
At Douglas College, you can earn transferable English course credit that can count towards a degree at another institution. See the BC Transfer Guide for more information and to check the eligibility of your courses.Associate of Arts Degree
An Associate of Arts (AA) degree from Douglas College guarantees you 60 transfer credits towards an Arts degree at another institution. Studying English will fit into your Associate of Arts degree, no matter what your area of specialization:
- All AA degrees require six (6) credits in English.
- Some AA specializations, such as International/Intercultural Studies, and Women's Studies and Gender Relations, include several English courses among their designated electives.
- If English is your principal area of interest, you can complete an AA with a Specialization in English.
Learn more about the Associate of Arts requirements.
Flexible Pre-Major
The English Flexible Pre-Major (FPM) provides another option for those who want to transfer to a university as an English major after two years. As with the Associate of Arts in English, the FPM allows you to transfer a full 60 credits towards your BA.
By guiding your English course choices, the FPM ensures that, upon acceptance into the major, you'll be able to enter straight into third-year studies without having to go back to fill in any lower-level period or genre requirements.
The FPM fully complements the AA in English: satisfy all your lower-division requirements while completing your two-year Associate of Arts degree in English, and maximize your credit transfer to university.
The FPM requirements for an English major are as follows:
-
18 credits (six courses) of first- and second-year English courses (including at least 9 second-year credits, or three second-year courses)
-
At least 3 credits of second-year historical survey (one course; choose from ENGL 2316, ENGL 2317, and ENGL 2319)
The FPM also allows you flexibility to take other English-related courses: one Creative Writing course (3 credits) may count towards the FPM (view course options).
Please note that the English Flexible Pre-Major does not guarantee entry into the university of your choice. Your GPA and overall number of credits will still be evaluated. Pay attention to the specific requirements of the institution(s) to which you apply.
Students are responsible for requesting recognition of their FPM at the time they apply to the transfer institution(s) of their choice. Please see an academic advisor for further information on this process.
For a list of participating institutions where your FPM will be recognized, see the BCCAT website.
English Course Planner
Students are encouraged to fulfill the requirements for both the AA in English and the English FPM at the same time. A printable English Course Planner is available to help students plan and track their credits.Note: You must be able to view PDF files in order to access the English Course Planner.
