Employment

The new Health Care Support Worker Program is the only public college program in the Lower Mainland offering this blend of care-skills training. Graduates have a wide range of applicable knowledge and skills including:

  • The ability to apply the knowledge acquired in the Health Care Support Worker Program in a variety of practice settings and to appreciate the role of life-long learning in their practice
  • The ability to communicate effectively and in a caring and respectful manner
  • The ability to practice ethically and to demonstrate responsible and accountable behaviour
  • The ability to think critically and creatively to meet the varying needs of clients
  • The ability to work effectively as a team member

According to an employment survey conducted by the Institutional Research and Planning Department, close to 100% of graduates of the Health Care Support Worker, the former Home Support Resident Care Attendant (now Health Care Assistant) and Community Mental Health Care Worker programs are currently employed in the field. In fact, many students have commitment of employment before they finish their studies.

Why are Douglas graduates in such high demand?

  • HCSW program unique to BC – employers are now demanding grads with both physical and mental health care skills
  • Great reputation – because HCSWs are unregulated care providers, school reputation is very important to employers
  • Learning resources – cutting-edge facilities, such as simulation labs, means grads have hands-on experience before they graduate
  • Practicums – work placements in the community mean students can practice their classroom skills in real-life situations, as well as build relationships with potential employers before graduation

Where do HCSW grads work?

  • Community Care Facilities

Graduates may also find this program a first step in pursuing further education in Licensed Practical Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing.
