Doug Smith
Doug Smith was born in Vancouver in 1957. He has been active in the Vancouver music community for more than 25 years as performer, composer, arranger and teacher. He has received numerous commissions, most recently from the Canadian Music Centre, the Douglas College Music Department, Joe Trio, Little Chamber Music Series, L.E.A.P.S. (Live Electronic Arts Performance Series) and the Vancouver Folk Orchestra. His works have been played throughout Canada and the United States and are in the repertoire of several Vancouver ensembles.
He received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in music composition from the University of British Columbia, where he studied with Eugene Wilson, Steven Chatman and Keith Hamel. He also holds two diplomas from Capilano College in Jazz and Composition and one from the Deutsche Akademische Austausch Dienst (Frankfurt). Since graduating from university in 1991, he has been actively involved with the Vancouver new music scene. He is the current president of the Little Chamber Music Series That Could, a group that is very active in the promotion, playing and commissioning of new music. He has also been on the board of Vancouver Pro Musica Society (a Vancouver collective of composers) since 1992, including five years as president. He has a close affiliation with several ensembles and musicians such as Joe Trio, Standing Wave Ensemble, and the Vancouver Folk Orchestra.
Since 1994, Doug has been teaching music at Douglas College in New Westminster. The following year he joined the faculty of the Vancouver Academy of Music, where he teaches in the Bachelor of Music program. He teaches Theory, Composition, Orchestration, Sight-Singing and Ear-Training.
