Sign Language Interpretation
Sign Language Interpretation offers a dynamic career in a rapidly expanding field. As Deaf individuals increasingly access education, career and community services, the demand for Sign Language Interpreters is growing across the country.
If you are skilled in American Sign Language, Douglas College offers a two-year program that is unique in British Columbia and well-respected across Canada and North America. As a student, you will learn with excellent faculty in a program emphasizing experience and community work terms. You will also broaden your knowledge and employability in core courses with students from other programs in the Faculty of Child, Family and Community Studies - a unique feature among Canadian interpreting programs.
As a graduate, you will be able to act biculturally and communicate bilingually, think critically and act ethically, interpret meaning and manage the interpreting process, maintain balance in your work and personal life and establish an independent interpreting business.
Do you have what it takes to succeed in the Sign Language Program and as an Interpreter?
American Sign Language Skills
Entry into the Program of Sign Language Interpretation requires a high level of skill in American Sign Language (ASL) as measured in the Canadian ASL Competency Interview. Full prerequisites for the program are listed in the on-line College Calendar.
Students planning to enter the Douglas College program are encouraged to first complete an accredited program in ASL and Deaf Studies. Many of our students in Greater Vancouver first complete the 10-month ASL and Deaf Studies program at Vancouver Community College (VCC). While completing this program cannot guarantee a seat at Douglas College, the majority of spaces are awarded to VCC program graduates.
