Awards/Scholarships
The Sport Science Department offers numerous awards/scholarships to students enrolled in the Sport Science Diploma and Bachelor of Physical Education & Coaching programs. These awards/scholarships are regularly given to students who excel academically while also displaying a passion for Sport, Physical Education and Coaching both inside and outside the College. Applications must be received by the March 13, 2012 deadline with winners announced at the annual Sport Science Scholarship Social from 4:30-5:30pm on Wednesday April 4th in room 4920 New Westminster campus. 2012 awards/scholarships include:
1. Bob Bearpark Foundation Coaching Award of Distinction
The Foundation will make monetary awards to students enrolled in the Douglas College Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching or Sport Science Diploma Program. Selections will be made by the Sport Science faculty in conjunction with the Foundation.
There will be one $1,000 reward chosen from the Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching Degree program or the Sport Science Diploma program as well as three (3) $500 awards (one to be presented to a 2nd year student, one to a 3rd year student and a one to a 4th year (graduating) Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching student.
The criteria for the awards include students who:- are full time status;
- exhibit a commitment to coaching education and demonstrate a positive involvement in community sport;
- be considered a 'top student' in their respective year of their program by Sport Science faculty members

Bob Bearpark Foudnation Coaching Award 2011: Rebecca Innis (4th year winner), Tanya Matson (2nd year & overall winner) , Mike Twaites (3rd year winner), Gord Sturrock (BPEC Coaching Coordinator)
2. Julia Ascough Scholarship
This award is given to a student or students who demonstrate(s) a high level of academic achievement and practical experience in sport science and athletics. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has:
- completed a minimum of 30 credits at Douglas College
- is in the Sport Science Diploma or the Bachelor of Physical Education & Coaching (BPEC) Program
- academic achievement and a GPA of 3.5 will determine the winners of this scholarship
- must demonstrate a high level of participation in the community, and in Douglas College sport activities.

3. Mary & Tony Frick Memorial Scholarship
This award honours a Douglas College Sport Science Diploma or Bachelor of Physical Education & Coaching (BPEC)student who best demonstrates the personal and professional characteristics of the late Mary & Tony Frick, parents of coach and SPSC faculty member Tim Frick. Candidates for the award must:
- have achieved a GPA of 3.5 or over
- be public spirited and personally responsible
- recognized as a full-time student

4. Thomas A. Phillips Memorial Award
This award is given to a student or students who demonstrate a keenness for designing and creating projects outside the base curriculum. Recipients will receive an award that is meant to be applied towards their tuition costs at the College. The award is given once the results of the winter semester are reported and is awarded to a third year Sport Science student in the BPEC degree who:
- recognized as a 3rd year Bachelor of Physical Education & Coaching (BPEC) student
- demonstrates an interest in, and aptitude for, emerging technologies
- demonstrates initiative with developing projects outside of the basic curriculum

5. Sport Science Faculty Leadership Award
This award is given to a returning Sport Science Diploma or Bachelor of Physical Educaion & Coaching student who:
- completed and passed 24 credits with a GPA of at least 3.0
- is currently registered in at least 9 credits
- is in either the Sport Science closed enrolment or Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching (BPEC) program
- demonstrates positive leadership characteristics at the College and in the community
- is a returning student in the SPSC Diploma or BPEC Program

SPSC Faculty Leadership Award 2011: Ken Anderson (BPEC Coordinator), Rebecca Innis (winner), Michaela Staller (co-runner-up), Hassan Askari (co-runner-up)
6. Coaches Association of British Columbia (CABC) Fieldwork Recognition Awards
This award is given to four Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching (BPEC) students chosen one from each BPEC Class, based on their performance and/or achievement with their Site Supervisor and the participants at their community Fieldwork Placement Site.
CABC BPEC Fieldwork Recognition Award criteria is:
- have never before received a BPEC CABC Fieldwork Recognition Award
- be a fulltime BPEC student
- receive a nomination from their Site Supervisor based on leadership presence, participant interactions and overall achievement at the Site (note: student must be nominated by fieldwork supervisor)
- be recommended by Douglas College Fieldwork Faculty Supervisor
- be a CABC member and in good standing with the Association
- have one of the highest course marks in their Fall Fieldwork course

7. Chris Johnson Scholarship
This award honors a Sport Science or Bachelor of Physical Education & Coaching student who most represents the professional and personal characteristics of past Sport Science faculty member Chris Johnson. Winners of this scholarship must be nominated by a Sport Science faculty member and possess the 2 personal characteristics lsited below:
- Outstanding tenacity and fortitude with a joyous attitude towards others or a special aptitude for generosity of spirit.
- Preference will be given to students who demonstrate positive role modeling and the ability to reach out to others. A propensity to bring "a little sanity into a totally insane world"

The application deadline for these awards is Friday March 16, 2012. Awards/Scholarships will be presented at the annual Sport Science Awards Social at New Westminster Campus in room 4920 on Wednesday April 4th (4:30-5:30pm).
