DC Alerts

DC Alerts is emergency communication to your email and mobile phone.

Safety of students and employees is a top priority for Douglas College. And good communication is essential in any urgent or emergency situation on campus. That’s why the College has established DC Alerts, a system that will send you emergency notifications quickly.

If there is an emergency that could affect people’s safety on campus, or a serious event that affects College operations, DC Alerts can tell you what’s happening. And it can tell you what to do, for example: take cover on campus, leave the campus or avoid the campus.

All students and employees should subscribe to DC Alerts, so sign up now! Go to myDouglas and:

  • Login to myDouglas with your student ID/employee PIN
  • Access the self-service box on the left side of the page and click on the “Student” or “Employee” self-service link
  • Click the “Personal Information” link, then click on “Update Emergency Notification Information,” and fill in your information

When will Douglas College use DC Alerts?
The College will use DC Alerts:

  • To notify you of events that could affect your safety on campus, such as a chemical spill, bomb threat, or a dangerous person.
  • To notify you of a campus closure due to extreme weather, power outage, or other serious event.
  • To notify you of any safety or security situation that requires you to take protection on campus, leave, or avoid a campus.
  • To inform you when a situation is resolved.

DC Alerts is one part of the College’s overall Emergency Notification System. In an emergency situation, important information may also be announced inside the campus on the public address system, posted on the douglascollege.ca website, sent via myDouglas email to students and via College email to employees, or distributed to local media outlets.

What kind of messages can I expect to receive?
In an emergency situation, you will immediately receive a message from DC Alerts via e-mail, text message and/or phone, depending on which contact information you provided and how many services you subscribed to.

What will the messages say?
Messages will be brief. They will describe the most important details of the situation, and tell you what to do next. A hypothetical message in a fictitious room “B9999” might read: “Chemical spill room B9999 David Lam Campus. Evacuate Building. Info: http://www.douglascollege.ca or 1 877 679 0823.”

How will I know if it’s a test?
Subscribers will be advised of any testing of the DC Alerts system in advance, via the College email and myDouglas. The system is tested on a regular basis. During a system test, messages you receive will have word “TEST” in the subject line. For example: “TEST: DC Alerts.” Messages sent in an actual emergency will not have the word “Test” in the subject line. Instead, the subject line will be something like: “Emergency Alert,” “Urgent Advisory” or “Emergency Notification,” depending on the type of emergency.

What should I do if I get a message?
Follow the instructions, if any, in the message alert. Spread the word to others around you. Follow any instructions that you receive within the building from Douglas College safety and security personnel, or from the police or fire department.

What if I don’t know my Student or Employee ID or PIN?
If you’ve forgotten your ID or PIN, contact the Help Desk for assistance at helpdesk@douglascollege.ca or at 604 527 5330.

How will I know the message is from the Douglas College ENS?
Messages will be sent from the Office of Safety, Security and Risk Management or Facilities Services. The College uses a product from a company called Aizan to manage emergency notifications.

  • For emergency notification via email, the sender will be auto@aizan.com. The subject of the email will be related to the incident in progress. To prevent the message from being trapped in your spam filter, emails containing ‘@aizan.com’ should be added to your ‘safe’ list.
  • Phone calls will appear as coming from 1 877 679 0823
  • Text messages will appear to be coming from ID 32075 and the text will be prefaced with the word ‘AIZAN.’

How does my DC Alerts contact information differ from the emergency contact information kept on my student or employee record?
Your DC Alerts contact information may be used to contact you directly with urgent message alerts in the event of an emergency situation on campus or a serious event that impacts College operations.
The emergency contact information on your student or employee record will used to contact someone other than you in case of an emergency related only to you.

Will DC Alerts be used to communicate individual class cancellations?
No.
