Coursepacks

Coursepacks:

Coursepacks
The Bookstore is responsible for the production of printed course materials for distribution to students at reasonable prices. Coursepacks are becoming a helpful professional teaching tool, saving students money and providing a solution to copyrighted material Faculty wish for student reference.

This material can be made up of faculty course notes, lab notes, assignments, a compilation of material from various books and journals, or an out of print book. Douglas College has a licensing agreement with a copyright collective, Access Copyright, the Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency. Access represents a group of Publishers who allow permissions and payments of copyrighted material to be streamlined through one agency instead of obtaining permissions from individual rights holders. The Bookstore will label articles, log the articles in the required Access Copyright spreadsheets, track numbers of Coursepacks sold and process payment of fees on behalf of the College and keep copyright permission letters on file for auditing purposes. If Faculty choose to use copyright materials not covered by the Access Agreement, it is the responsibility of Faculty to obtain permission in writing directly from the copyright holder.

Timelines Additional time should be allowed for production of a coursepack which contains copyrighted material as the copyright must be logged before printing. As the number of submissions for printing increases in preparation for a major semester, more time must be allowed for production.
To ensure the Coursepack will be ready in time for the start of the teaching semester, consider the following guidelines:

Winter Semester: Beginning of September
Summer Semester: Last week of January
Fall Semester: Beginning of May

*Dates are established and advertised to all disciplines.

Coursepack submission check list:
Submit all necessary paperwork with the Coursepack.

Printing Form
Coursepack Printing Forms may be submitted before the manuscript is received by the Bookstore (for example, at the time the textbook requisition form is submitted). A Coursepack Printing Form must be completed prior to each printing to supply enrollment information, request department copies (one copy provided no charge per section taught, at the instructor's request), and ensure copyright compliance. The Coursepack Printing Form is available in both paper and electronic formats from the Bookstore and can be filled online or printed out by clicking here.

Copyright Log Sheet
Copyright Log Sheets must be submitted with Coursepacks that contain copyrighted material. Copyright clearance must take place prior to each duplication. Faculty are required to fill in the log sheet only at the time of first submission of the Coursepack. Copyrighted material covered by the Access Copyright licence will be logged and paid quarterly based on the number of units sold. The Copyright Log Sheets must be complete and accurate. Copyright log sheets are available from the Bookstore or can be accessed directly by clicking here.

Assignment of Copyright Confirmation for Printed Materials
Faculty who have reason to believe that the copyright for their material should be his/hers, complete the form found here, and forward it to the Dean for signature. This form must be submitted with the Coursepack Printing Form to the Bookstore. The form is not required if Douglas College holds the copyright on the work in question.
