Alanna Carmichael
Arts student
October 2004

Alanna Carmichael had an amazing summer.  Instead of working in an unfulfilling job, the second year Arts student participated in Co-op and was placed at the Hyack Festival Association.

"I applied for Co-op because I wanted to get ahead in this very competitive world.  I believe that by completing a Co-op work term, I have given myself the experience that an employer will look for.  I know that I will be selected over other candidates who have similar educational qualifications but lack relevant work experience.  In addition, I wanted to put my education into action."

As an Event Assistant, Alanna was responsible for organizing three exciting events: the Tricycle Race, the Mascot Parade, and the Work Boat Parade.  "Having the chance to organize three of the most thrilling events was truly remarkable.  It was extraordinary to see the children laughing, dancing, and having so much fun.  Hearing compliments from the public and participants on how much they enjoyed themselves reinforced my sense of success.  Above all, witnessing the results of the events that I had organized was one of the most wonderful feelings that I've ever experienced."

When asked what benefits she had gained in the Co-op work term, Alanna replied, "I have really enjoyed my Co-op work term this summer.  Not only did I have the opportunity to work with many respectable community members with whom I have established great friendships and great contacts in the business field, I also achieved a valuable piece of my educational goal as an elementary school principal.  As my previous experience didn't include any office work, this work term strengthened my skills in public relations, communications, organization, and event planning.  All of these skills are crucial for any high level administrator.  I plan to use all the knowledge that I have acquired to further build on my skills and to achieve my professional goals."

With this enlightening experience, Alanna would like to complete another Co-op work term next year.  She believes that Co-op can pave her way to success and achieve her dream of becoming an elementary school principal.
