Choosing the right career is not easy. Unless you have a clear vision of where you want to work, you may end up in the wrong job or in the wrong industry. Through the Co-operative Education Program, a student can acquire valuable insights towards a future career by working in a chosen field for a few semesters prior to graduation.
Allaine Lacap, a second year University Transfer Commerce student, was interested in the Accounting field. However, she was unsure if it was a suitable career path. She found the answer when she applied for the Co-op Program and was placed at Key West Ford as a Junior Accounting Clerk in the Fall of 2002.
"My main reason for applying for the Co-op Program was to gain work experience in relation to my future career. My goal is to have my designation as a Certified General Accountant. By accepting the position at Key West Ford, the progress of my education became real. Now I know that I definitely want to work in the Accounting field."
In addition, Allaine proved that the volunteer accounting experience she gained from assisting a local community church was most valuable in securing the position. The qualifications stated that the employer was looking for a second or third year Accounting student. However, Allaine was hired after completion of only two semesters of studies.
As a Junior Accounting Clerk, Allaine was responsible for posting pre-approved invoices, reconciling all accounts to supplier's statements monthly, requesting copies of missing invoices, and issuing accounts payable cheques. She also ensured accurate totals, GST, PST, expense allocation, and no duplication.
"I have learned so much at Key West Ford. This company taught me how to work in a team environment and to learn from each other. What I enjoyed most are the people, who are truly hardworking individuals. They made me feel welcome. Another valuable benefit from the Co-op experience is a boost of my confidence. I am now more confident in my skills and abilities. I have overcome my shyness. I am no longer afraid to ask questions and have better control of my work and responsibilities."
Allaine's outstanding work performance was recognized and rewarded. Key West Ford offered her a second work term. With the Co-op experience under her belt, she is looking forward to transferring to Simon Fraser University where she will be pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Commerce majoring in Accounting.
