Securing a placement at the Immigrant Services Society of BC in January is a double blessing, said Camelia Hulea, a second year Accounting student.
"I am very fortunate to get into a position that is related to my studies. Another benediction is I am able to render my service to help new immigrants. As an immigrant from Romania, I experienced first-hand some of the barriers that new immigrants are facing when searching for their first job in Canada. Besides culture differences and English as a Second Language, I didn?t have Canadian experience, which is a vital qualification for many positions. Although I was an Accountant in Romania, my credential is not recognized."
"Thanks to Co-op. The team opened my eyes to the job-hunting process in Canada with regards to writing a professional resume and cover letter, preparing for interviews, and proper work conducts. Prior to joining Co-op, I did apply for jobs on my own without success. It was not until I sat down with one of the Placement Officers that I realized my mistakes. The Co-op team spent a lot of time with me and helped me so much."
"As a Claims Accounting Assistant, I am responsible for tracking all financial transactions, preparing financial reports and budgets, performing claims and reconciliation, and participating in financial monitoring and audits of projects. I enjoy my work very much because it is a great opportunity to gain experience in all the accounting cycles. I also learned how to use Excel and ACCPAC effectively. Above all, I now have a good understanding of team work and truly enjoy being a team player."
Camelia encourages every student to participate in Co-op. "Most students need to look for a job sooner or later. Why not get professional help with your resume and interview skills? If your goal is to find a good position in your study area, Co-op can help you to practise your skills and prepare you well for work prior to your graduation."
