Chris Townend

Chris Townend
Computer Information Systems student
February 2004

After a successful work term at BC Centre for Disease Control as a System Analyst in January 2003, Chris Townend wanted to secure a second placement with repeat his positive experience in the Douglas College Co-op Program. "I wanted to have a chance to gain some work experience prior to graduating because I know how important it is to prospective employers.  I also wanted an opportunity to apply the theory I learned in class," explained Chris, a second year Computer Information Systems student.

True to his expectation, Chris succeeded in obtaining a placement at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada last fall.  As a Computer Assistant, Chris is was responsible for providing user support, installing software and hardware, and offering on site technical support at conferences.  Not only has he learned solid technical skills such as videoconferencing and wiring drops to routers, but he has also gained valuable soft skills such as prioritizing multiple tasks and communicating effectively communications.  Above all, he enjoyed the broad range of work and the friendliness of his co-workers who have made him feel at home.

"This Co-op work term has assured me that I made the right choice in choosing my program and I am confident in using the skills I have learned.  It also helps me apply new course material to a real working environment.  The way in which the instructors at Douglas College conducted their classes prepared me for the professionalism of the workplace.  This includes high expectations for quality assignments, strict deadlines and working with peers to achieve a common goal." said Chris.

Chris advises every student to participate in the Co-op Program because it opens doors that would otherwise be closed to students without practical work experience and industry contacts.  Co-op is an excellent way for students to gain experience and network with people in their related fields.

Impressed by his outstanding job performance, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada extended Chris' work term.  After graduation, he would like to continue working for the Federal Government and possibly re-locate to Winnipeg.
