Erin Rutherford
Arts student
March 2005

"I applied for Co-op because I wanted to enrich my college education by receiving on-the-job work experience.  I also wanted to have a better understanding of my career options while opening my range of possible study options," said Erin Rutherford, a second year Arts student.

With great determination and hard work, Erin succeeded in securing a placement at Cameray Centre this spring.  As a Fundraiser and Marketer, Erin's roles are diverse, interesting, and challenging.  She is responsible for researching fundraising opportunities, writing proposals, applying for funding, organizing events, and communicating with agencies.

"The placement is a good match as I enjoy working in a non-profit organization.  I have a keen interest in charity and volunteer work as a result of my active involvement with many non-profit organizations in the past.  Contributing to the community work of Cameray Centre is one of my favourite things about this position.  The Centre provides free counselling and community support to children, youth, and families.  This is important work that I believe in.  The placement has increased my knowledge of working in a non-profit environment.  I have learned a lot about writing and communicating in a professional environment.  Above all, the work term has given me a chance to identify my strengths and to create a clear idea of what career options I am well suited to."

Erin encourages every student to try Co-op.  "Co-op positions offer a learning experience that college classes alone cannot.  I advise students to take any opportunities that Co-op offers and to participate in the community.  Students can gain valuable work experience by getting involved in community programs.  It can also create excellent networking opportunities and generate references for future employment."
