Kavid Chan

Kavid Chan
Computer Information Systems student
May 2004

Kavid Chan, a second year Computer Information Systems student, is passionate about computers.  His passion for computers is shown through his work and at home as he owns seven computers and would like to own more.  "I love working with computers.  I enjoy networking computers and building my own servers.  I feel the need to practise networking in order to acquire my Microsoft and other certificates.  Recently, I have added two more computers so that my home stations would be bigger."

His zeal and talents in working with computers have helped him to secure two successful Co-op work terms.  The first one was working as a Junior IT Technician at Capilano Suspension Bridge during the Summer of 2003.  The second one was working as a User Support Analyst with City of Richmond during the Spring of 2004.  "At first glance, I thought my duties and responsibilities would be quite similar to my previous work experience.  In reality, the two jobs were quite different.  At the Capilano Suspension Bridge job, I assisted 100 staff with their IT problems.  I performed a variety of tasks such as software, hardware, and networking.  At the City of Richmond, I served over 600 staff.   My job was quite specific and interesting.  I provided hardware support for my clients.  From time to time, I visited user sites that were outside the City Hall.  It was cool and exciting to be picked up by a fire truck because the Fire Hall needed me to repair one of their computers.  I enjoyed a greater level of independence and the ability to help more people.  Nonetheless, both work terms have provided me with many invaluable experiences, which I would not have had without participating in the Co-op Program."

His advice to his fellow students is to participate in the Co-op experience.  "The Co-op Program at Douglas College is amazing.  The Placement Officers helped me to create an impressive resume and cover letter that won interviews.  Then, they taught me essential interview skills and how to sell myself during the interview.  Above all, they encouraged me to keep going and to persevere.  The staff's emotional support helped me through the difficult moments.  I recommend the Co-op experience to every student."

After two successful work terms, Kavid is ready to move on to the next level.  He is looking for more challenging positions with greater responsibilities.  After graduation, he plans to pursue his dream as a Networking Administrator.
