  Lan Ning
  Accounting student

  June 2005

After a successful work term at Tina Nguyen & Co. in 2004, Lan Ning - a second year Accounting student, wanted to participate in Co-op again.  "I applied for Co-op again because I wanted to broaden my accounting skills and knowledge.  I would also like to work in a different work place to decide what kind of job I want after graduation."

To her joy, Lan secured a placement at A-R & Partners Chartered Accountants as an Accounting Assistant in January.  "My work at A-R is challenging and interesting.  Apart from preparing personal and corporation tax returns, I am responsible for compiling financial statements and performing bookkeeping for clients.  In fact, my work at Tina Nguyen has prepared me well for this work term.  Without the first work term, I would not do a better job at A-R."

Lan has learned a lot about accounting and many other skills that are unrelated to accounting.  "Caseware is an important program that I have learned.  It is a widely used program in CA firms but it is not easy to learn.  I have learned how to communicate effectively with my supervisor and co-workers.  This is such an essential skill that cannot be conceptualized in a classroom.  Working in a multi-task environment has strengthened my time management and organizational skills.  These skills are crucial in any business environment especially in accounting firms.  In addition, my work experience synchronizes with my studies.  I further understand the accounting principles I have learned from school.  I now clearly understand the difference between accounting income and taxable income.  My work term also helps me with my income tax class."

"My work term at Tina Nguyen and A-R Partners has proved an invaluable experience for my career.  I continue to learn while I am working.  Co-op helps me to digest what I have learned at school.  It enhances the integration of practical experience and theoretical concepts.  Normally, it?s very difficult for students to find their first job in the field they are studying because most employers prefer hiring someone with work experience.  Students may have learned the accounting theories at school, but applying them into the real world is quite different.  With Co-op, students can put their academic knowledge into practical experience, which greatly enhances their chances of success in today's competitive job market.  Co-op is an outstanding program Douglas College has offered.  Every student should participate and do their best to succeed in Co-op.  Learn as much as you can from the work term and prepare for your future career."
