What a TRIUMF! Douglas College student - Leonid Sergueev - has successfully landed a Co-op placement at TRIUMF in May, the first Douglas College student to do so.
TRIUMF is a world-class subatomic physics research laboratory located at UBC specializing in producing extremely intense beams of particles. It houses the world's largest cyclotron, which is used to accelerate 1,000 trillion particles per second. Because of these unusual high intensity beams, scientists from over twenty-five countries have come to TRIUMF since 1974 to run their experiments on health treatments and high-tech innovations.
The hiring process was extremely competitive. Students from all over Canada were competing for Co-op placements at TRIUMF. Only top students were selected and Leonid is very excited about the placement.
As a Mechanical Designer, Leonid is responsible for providing designs and shop drawings for equipment related to cyclotron and experimental apparatus. He works from rough sketches and verbal instructions when preparing layouts and drawings. Right now, he is redesigning the table used to make elementary particle detectors.
Leonid loves his work term. "TRIUMF is a great place to work and to learn. People are very friendly and the working environment is awesome. The organization offers excellent program and weekly training sessions for students. I learned more AutoCAD in a week at work than in a semester at the College. In fact, lots of information and procedures on drafting can only be learned at work," said Leonid, a second year Science student.
The placement is a perfect match for his future aspirations as a mechanical engineer. "I like math, physics, and any flying objects. Engineering is the field that incorporates all my interests."
