Martyn York
Martyn York, Computing Science and Information Systems student at HOPE International Development Agency - 2009.
For Computing Science and Information Systems (CSIS) student Martyn York, Co-operative (Co-op) Education gave him the chance to test the waters in his field of study to see if it was really the right career path for him. He was not disappointed; the four-month summer term he worked with HOPE International Development Agency reassured him that he had made the right choice.
Martyn secured the four-month summer term in the IT department at HOPE after Simon Li (CSIS instructor) and Raymond Yu (CSIS Chair) encouraged him to apply for Co-op. His experience at HOPE, a small non-profit organization based in New Westminster, confirmed his passion for Programming and allowed him to try out some Networking as well. He was able to gain the work experience necessary to obtain a full-time job, as well as a quality work reference from his employer. Looking back, he's extremely pleased he took the advice from his instructors and devoted the time to honing his resume writing and interviewing skills.
For Martyn, the chance to work in his field of study was invaluable, as it allowed him to try out his potential career and earn some money at the same time. If he could share one piece of advice with his peers, it would be: don't miss out on Co-op.
