Mikiko Karito

Mikiko Karito
Arts student
October 2003

Team Co-op is proud to introduce a second year Arts student, Mikiko Karito.  Mikiko, an international student from Japan, is sociable, empathetic, and enthusiastic.  With enormous initiative and determination, Mikiko found a job on her own at Jun School Information Centre as a School Counsellor last summer.

"Through the Co-op program, I can not only gain valuable Canadian work experience but also apply my skills and knowledge in a real work environment," said Mikiko.

As a School Counsellor, Mikiko was responsible for promoting local institutions to the Japanese market, launching marketing campaigns, and liaising between Japanese students and various schools.  In addition, she provided counselling services to students who had educational, emotional, or career concerns.

Mikiko found her work challenging and rewarding.  She was able to use the marketing skills and counselling skills, which she learned at Douglas College.  In fact, the placement was a great fit for her as it brought together her interests, educational experiences, and career aspirations into one.

Her secret to success is to build strong relationships with people.  She is always cheerful, friendly, and polite.  When helping her clients, Mikiko first identified their backgrounds and then matched them with the appropriate programs.  If students had any complaints or concerns, she would listen attentively and supportively.

The greatest benefit that Mikiko gained from her Co-op experience is illuminating her career path.  Mikiko was wrestling between the choice to become an Educational Advisor or a Marketing Coordinator.  She now believes that a School Counsellor is the best position for her as she can perform both educational advising and marketing coordination.

Mikiko has a track record at Douglas College.  She has been on the Honour Roll twice and was awarded two International Education scholarships at Douglas College.
