Paul Cheetham

 Paul Cheetham
 Commerce student
 April 2006

"After a successful career in the IT field, I was thinking about a career switch. I was a senior IT Professional in several organizations. The industry was interesting and rewarding. However, it lacked the social interaction that I was craving," recalled Paul Cheetham, an international student from Australia.

"I have always had a special interest in Finance. My passion began when I started investing seven years ago. I have enjoyed the ups and downs of the financial markets. I thought helping clients with their financial needs would be a wise career choice."

Without training and experience in finance, Paul wanted to further his studies. "I chose Douglas College because of its convenient location, reputation, and transferability to universities. I joined Co-op to get some hands-on experience."

After strenuous job research, Paul landed a Financial Consultant position at Investors Group in January. "My major responsibilities are showing clients how to build and manage their financial wealth and security, developing a customized financial plan for clients, helping clients to select the right products, and providing clients with ongoing personalized service."

"My work is enjoyable and challenging. I love working in a positive and motivating environment where everyone is friendly and supportive. The training is fantastic. I flew to Edmonton for a two-week training program and all my expenses were paid by the company. I have learned so much in a short time because of the training. On the other hand, my biggest challenge is to convince my prospects that I'm not there to just sell them a product. Once I explain my services and show them different options to achieve their goals, they are more than happy to work with me."

"Working at Investors Group has taught me a lot about working with people. Everyone is unique and dealing with finance is a very personal thing. I am learning how to deal with different types of people. Every time I am out of my comfort zone, I feel I am learning something new."

Paul advises students to participate in Co-op. "Co-op has allowed me to discover new opportunities and gain valuable experience that no other course can teach as effectively. Real life experience in the work force is the best way to get where you want to go. Remember, the difference between someone who is successful and someone who is not is your own personal discipline. Set your goals high and then start from the bottom. Given that, try everything and have fun."
