Repaying government student loans:
If you haven’t already done so, set up an account with National Student Loan Service Centre to access on-line services including updating your address and viewing your repayment details.
Once you have been out of full-time study for six months, whether you are studying part-time, or have left school, it is time to start repaying your student loans. If you are having difficulty making monthly payments you may be eligible for debt management programs such as Repayment Assistance. To apply for Repayment Assistance, contact the National Student Loan Service Centre at 1 888 815 4514 for an application form.
You can claim a tax credit on the interest portion of the amount paid on student loan payments each year. For more information, visit the tax relief section of the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada website.
If you return to school full-time at a later date:
If you are repaying student loans and return to full-time study, your student loans can be put into interest-free status. You can apply on-line for interest-free status on the StudentAidBC site.
