If you are a student participating in a group such as a field school, practicum or service learning program it is important for you to notify your accompanying faculty of any of the above situations.
It is likely faculty is aware of situational emergencies but may not be aware of some personal emergencies. If your roommate did not come home from the party last night or was arrested then faculty need to know so that they can take the necessary steps.
Personal Emergency
If faculty is not present you can assist by:
Checking the scene and determining if it is safe to approach the distressed person.
If safe, approaching and checking the person and identifying urgent issues, ie: breathing, bleeding, shock, and providing assistance to the best of your ability.
Getting help!
Situational Emergency
If faculty is not present, get to a safe place, then:
Return to your accommodations (or the institution hosting your group if your accommodations is not accessible) so Faculty knows you are safe.
If you cannot return to your accommodations or host institution, report to the local police station. Faculty will check with the local police if you do not return.
You should try to remain as calm as possible and follow the directions of Faculty who will make the decision whether to evacuate. You may be asked to remain with their host families or stay in residence hall rooms or hotels until further arrangements can be made.
Faculty will consult with Douglas College who will liaise with the Canadian consulate regarding the evacuation decision and appropriate arrangements will be made for continuing or discontinuing the program.
Student emergency contacts will be informed by Douglas College of your health, safety and the details of your situation. If you are able to call home, inform your family of the state of your personal safety and ask them to contact Douglas College International for details.
