Working Abroad

Thailand Work Exchange

Each summer Douglas College students have the opportunity to work in Thailand in the hospitality industry for three months (May, June, July). Douglas College's Hotel and Restaurant Management program operates a student exchange with Rajabhat Institute, sending Douglas College students to work in resort hotels in Thailand and hosting students from Rajabhat in resort hotels in Western Canada.

This is unpaid work for Douglas College students but you will get free room and board. You are required to cover the costs of their airfare as well as your medical insurance. You can select from three Thailand destinations:

  • Bangkok
  • Petchburi
  • Chiangmai

While all Douglas College students are eligible, HORM students receive first priority. Space is limited to nine students. For more information contact HORM Coordinator Mark Elliott or call 604-777-6209.

Students who go on this work abroad program are eligible to apply for the International Studies Award. You can also attend a pre-departure session offered by Douglas College International.

Students must complete a Travel Abroad Information Form and sign a completed Emergency Contact Form and a Release of Liability Form. These forms must be dropped off to the attention of Karen Ng at the Douglas College International Office at least one month before you leave.

SWAP Working Holidays

SWAP is a non-profit program of the Canadian Federation of Students helping students take a working holiday to learn about new cultures and get international employment experience. Students usually spend up to one year abroad and can choose from a variety of countries. SWAP helps students with visa applications, accommodations and finding a job. There are also internships and volunteer opportunities available through SWAP.
