Tutor Training

Tutor training is always taking place in the Learning Centre. All tutors do both pre-service and in-service training.

Each new tutor in the Douglas College Learning Centre completes two weeks of training before meeting with his or her first student. This training includes an orientation to the Learning Centre, readings in our tutoring manual, videos, activities, and observations of more experienced tutors. The training continues throughout the term with dedicated time each week for training activities, communication with other tutors and faculty in our online training forums, and weekly training meetings with faculty and other tutors. Each new tutor is observed by faculty in one of their tutoring sessions near the end of the term and given feedback to improve their sessions.

During their first term in the Learning Centre, we expect new tutors to complete Level 1 CRLA training, and we are always excited to award the certificates at the end of each term.

Returning tutors continue their training, and are given time, materials, and faculty guidance to achieve CRLA levels 2 and 3.
