Basic Occupational Education Courses which provide special needs students with skills enabling them to obtain entry-level jobs in a variety of fields through a combination of individualized and classroom instruction.
Career and Employment Preparation is a priority of our Career Resource Centre. With resource materials, counselors and assistance in everything from career planning to interview skills to resume preparation and employment assistance in our co-op educational programs, Douglas College offers a broad range of support opportunities.
Consumer and Job Preparation Program is designed for students with intellectual disabilities who want to learn the personal, social and work skills needed to get and keep a job and to use community services.
Developmental Studies Program (DVST) offers a variety of courses designed to help adults upgrade their education and skills and prepare for entry into college-level courses and programs. DVST classes provide a supportive environment that encourages students to develop effective learning and study strategies.
ESL - English as a Second Language Douglas College offers ESL students two levels of courses: a two-week immersion or four- and eight-week programs, running in July and August. Students who will continue on into academic ESL courses at Douglas College are encouraged to attend. The programs focus on reading, listening and speaking skills, BC history and the cultural diversity of British Columbia. This program is open to everyone and international students are welcome to join.
Human Development (HUMD) courses at Douglas College assist you in making educational choices and selecting an appropriate career. They also provide you with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and to achieve personal goals.
New Directions offers college preparatory skills for students with an acquired head injury. Courses provide students with a range of assessment and self-management skills with a view to establishing achievable educational and career goals. Instruction includes individual skill development, assistance in setting realistic educational goals and the development of an individualized learning plan.
Reading and Study Skills are half-semester courses focusing on improvement of reading comprehension and speed as well as study and listening skills, exam preparation, taking lecture and text notes, time utilization, concentration and remembering, study techniques and the organization of term papers. You will also explore personal development strategies for self-esteem, confidence building and motivation for learning.
Student Success is supported with a range of courses addressing student orientation, specific university-level reading, writing and study skills, as well as exam preparation, time utilization, concentration, researching and preparing papers. The Training Group offers a broad range of government and industry-supported programs including assistance for job search and career development, self employment and small business development and training.
