Submission Guide
Guidelines for Submissions & Guidelines for Cover Art
We mainly publish fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction. As well, each issue contains a selection of reviews, and in these we try to match book and reviewer. We occasionally publish unsolicited reviews, but you should query us first. We publish mostly Canadian writers, but are open to anyone writing in English. We do not read manuscripts in January, July, August and December.
Is your work appropriate for EVENT? Our best advice is to read the magazine before submitting. Check major bookstores and libraries near you for the current issue; sample back issues are available ($9 for Canadian residents; US$9 for US residents; CDN$13 for overseas residents and institutions). To purchase a copy now click here.
In fiction, we're looking for readability, style, well-handled characters and a strong, effective point of view (although not necessarily all in the same story). In poetry, we tend to appreciate the narrative and sometimes the confessional modes. In any case, we are eclectic and always open to content that invites involvement. Generally, we like strong narrative.
Some suggestions to consider:
1. Always include a stamped, self-addressed return envelope. Send Canadian stamps, international reply coupons or US$1 if you are submitting from outside Canada. Tell us if you'd prefer your manuscript to be recycled rather than returned. We do not accept email submissions, nor do we respond electronically.
2. Submit three to eight poems but no more than two short stories (maximum 5000 words each). We rarely publish excerpts from novels, unless they stand well on their own.
3. Attach a brief covering letter with your contact information, the title(s) of your submission(s) and listing other publications credits, if any.
4. We reply as soon as possible, usually within one to six months.
5. We pay a minimum of $25 ($30 for a poet's first page) on publication (up to a maximum of $500), and publication is within a year of acceptance. We buy first North American serial print rights and limited, non-exclusive digital rights; copyright reverts to the author after publication.
6. We run a $1500 Non-Fiction Contest every spring; entries must be postmarked no later than April 15. For information about the entry fee, the final judge, and other submission details, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Ian Cockfield, Managing Editor, or visit the Contest page.
7. For information on our Reading Service for Writers, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Ian Cockfield, Managing Editor, or visit the Reading Service page.
Guidelines for Artists
We look for art that is adaptable to a cover, particularly images that are self-sufficient and don't lead the reader to expect further artwork within the journal.
We pay $150 on publication and we send you two free copies plus ten extra covers.
Please view covers of recent issues for examples of the varied kinds of artwork we feature.
Please send photography/artwork (no more than 10 images) to EVENT, along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope (Canadian postage or IRCs only) for return of your work. We also accept email submissions of cover art. We recommend that you send low-res versions of your photography/art as small jpeg or pdf attachments. If we are interested, we will request hi-resolution files.
We do not buy the actual piece of art; we only pay for the use of the image.
