The City of New Westminster has established a $20,000 bursary for New Westminster students enrolled at Douglas College.
The bursary commemorates the city's 150th anniversary. From left to right: Douglas College president Dr. Scott McAlpine, New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright, Douglas College Foundation chair Baj Puri and Douglas College associate vice president external Hazel Postma.

A Douglas College instructor is donating his book royalties to a new bursary to help accounting students in financial need continue their studies. George Fisher, an accounting instructor and co-author of the textbook Intermediate Accounting, says he will donate $1,000 a year to the George Fisher Accounting Bursary, established this year.
The annual fund will provide bursaries to Douglas College students enrolled in either the Accounting Management Diploma or the Bachelor of Business Administration – Accounting Stream. "This is an inspiring gesture from one of our instructors," says Hazel Postma, associate vice president, External Relations, Douglas College. "It demonstrates a commitment that goes far beyond the classroom walls."
Douglas College is one of the largest colleges in British Columbia, providing a variety of bachelor's degrees, university transfer, career and developmental programs for over 20,000 students each year.
In 2010, thanks to the generosity of our donors, more than 1,800 bursaries, scholarships and awards were distributed to Douglas College students. Thank You!
This year, the need for additional student assistance is urgent.
Applications to enter the College are up by 12 percent as more and more people recognize that education and training can change their lives by allowing them to earn more and be more productive citizens. And they are choosing Douglas College as the high-quality, affordable route to university and long-term careers.
But as you know, tuition fees were increased at post-secondary educational institutions throughout BC. Although the College was able to provide a grant to help our students, we know that the Lower Mainland's high cost of living coupled with reduced government assistance is having a serious impact on some of our students. In fact, our Financial Aid office has already experienced a 15 percent increase in applications for bursary assistance.
Your donation is powerful. Your investment in students will build endowment funds generating income for students now and into the future.
We believe in the power of education to change lives and improve the future. We invite you to join us in supporting those who are pursuing their dreams to make a better future for everyone.
