I have been coming to Douglas College for two years now. The good news is I'm getting smarter! The bad news is it's costing me an arm and a leg! That's the same story for most students I've met, but for me, I'm not going through this because my parents are making me, or because I am great at sports. I am going to school so that by the time my son is in elementary school, I'll have a great job where I can help other people.
I am starting the Community Social Service Worker Program in September. This program will take me four-an-a-half years, because I am taking it on a part-time basis in order to raise my son, and volunteer, in order to maintain training in the human service field.
I am the proud owner of a bouncing bundle of astronomical energy, otherwise know as a 'Terrific Two Year Old'. His name is Gino, and he does not go anywhere without his little purple, key-chain sized Telletubbie attached to his clothes.
I want Gino to have everything he needs to be a well-rounded, loving, happy, healthy child. That's what all parents want for their children. Sometimes I'm worried that as he gets older, he's going to want more expensive things, or worse, stuff he won't actually 'need'. I get mad at myself sometimes for bringing a child into the world without a father. But I wouldn't have it any other way.
There are lots of hurdles to leap, and even more things clouding the silver lining, but there are people out there that are on my side. For them I am thankful. There was SMILE, (Supporting Mothers Integrating Love and Education), my day care provider and the people at the Douglas College Student Finance Office.
This semester, I received my first bursary. What a surprise! I was so happy, that once again, someone, or more fittingly, lots of people, were on my side. It's so nice to receive mail that is not a bill or junk mail. It is such a treat for the mail lady to hand over good news. It sends out such a positive vibe.
Receiving this bursary was not just money, but like a hug, and card that said, keep going! You can do it!! It was a nice nudge that managed to help me keep my goals in perspective. A little unexpected money has never met such reward! Gino and I thank all the gracious contributors of the bursaries from the bottom of our souls.
