Terms of Reference

Purpose:
This committee provides a vital link with the Douglas College communities that enables the effective operation of the Centre for Health and Community Partnerships. The committee provides advice on the operation of the Centre and facilitates relationships with community agencies, employer groups and related educational institutions to support the development and implementation of community service-learning and community-based research activities.
Responsibilities:
- Provides advice on Centre operations as they relate to promoting strong links with the community;
- Assists in the identification and development of a range of community service-learning experiences for Douglas College students;
- Assists in the identification and development of community-based research opportunities for faculty, students and community agencies;
- Assists in promoting community and agency awareness of the Centre and a high level of community involvement;
- Assists in the identification of granting resources that support specific Centre activities; and
- Assists in providing and reviewing evaluative feedback of the Centre operations and makes recommendations for action.
Membership:
- Voting Members: 12 members, nominated from the following sectors:
- 10 representatives of community agencies in the health and human service sectors who are engaged in promoting healthy communities and community-based research; one of the representatives should represent community social planning and one represent aboriginal health; and
- 2 representatives from other educational institutions that are engaged in community-based research.

Selection: members are nominated by community agencies and College personnel. Nominations are reviewed and approved by the Operations Group.
- Member responsibilities: members must reflect the constituency they have been nominated to represent and be in a position to allocate time to fulfill committee responsibilities.
- Term of appointment: The term of appointment is up to three years, with one half of the members having anniversary dates one year later than the other half to ensure continuity. A member may serve two consecutive terms.
- Non-Voting representatives: Deans of the Faculties of Child, Family and Community Studies, Health Sciences, and Science and Technology, Special Projects Officer (Office of Vice President-Education) and Scholarly Activity Coordinator, a faculty representative from the Operations Group and other faculty/employees as appropriate.
Election of Chairs: The Committee will elect its own Chair and may, as a variation, elect co-Chairs. The Chair(s) shall be in the second year of their appointment (except for the initial year of Committee operation). The Chair cannot be a Douglas College employee. The Chair will communicate with the Special Projects Officer prior to each meeting to outline and receive approval of the agenda and to discuss any other preparations.
Staff Support for the Committee: This will be provided through the Office of the Vice President – Education.
Guidelines for Meetings:The Chair, with the assistance of the Special Projects Officer, is responsible for adhering to generally accepted operating procedures as follows:
- arranging a minimum of three meetings (to a maximum of six) in the first year of committee operations and two thereafter at appropriate times. Meetings may be initiated by the Chair or the Special Projects Officer, after consultation with one another; and
- distributing notice of meeting and agenda at least two weeks before the meeting to all members.
The Special Projects Officer will inform the Centre Operations Group and Faculties/Services of significant developments arising from the Committee meetings and circulate minutes of meetings to all members.
Evaluation: The performance of the committee will be evaluated every two years in a way determined by the College and the committee.

Terms of Reference

Purpose:
The committee facilitates close linkages between the operations of the Centre, the community and the Faculties. It provides advice and recommendation on Centre operations, initiatives and directions to the Director of the Centre. It promotes coordination between Faculty and Centre activities to promote and implement community service-learning and community based research.
Responsibilities:
- Provides a close linkage between the operation, goals and plans of the Centre and the Faculties of Child, Family and Community Studies, Health Sciences and Science and Technology in relation to community service-learning (CSL) and community-based research (CBR)
- Promotes linkages between the Centre and other Faculties, departments and services of the college
- Seeks and receives advice from the Community Advisory Committee on community liaison activities, granting opportunities and development and implementation of CSL and CBR activities
- Provides leadership in strategic and tactical planning for the Centre
- Provides advice on Centre operations to the Director
- Assists in problem solving and coordination related to operational matters
- Assists in the identification and plans for implementation of CSL and CBR opportunities
- Assists in the identification of funding resources to support Centre activities
- Reviews evaluation data on Centre operations and makes recommendations for follow up action
Membership:
- Deans of the Faculties of Child, Family and Community Studies, Health Sciences and Science and Technology or their designate
- 2 faculty representatives from each of the Faculties of Child, Family and Community Studies and Health Sciences, at least one faculty representative from the Faculty of Science and Technology. Other faculty may attend based on topics under discussion.

- Scholarly Activity Coordinator
- Director of CHCP and Special Projects Officer (Office of the Vice President - Education) (ex-officio)
