Agency
According to the Canadian Alliance for Community Service-Learning, Agency Staff carry the following responsibilities:
"As a full partner in a CSL course and/or program, staff from community organizations provide relevant information on the service needs of the organization. Additionally, they take a lead in collaboratively designing service placements that both address real community need and meet the stated learning objectives for the students. Their specific knowledge and experience make community organization staff the best partner to take responsibility for required orientation and/or training to prepare students for active involvement, and to supervise students during their service placements. Organization staff can play an invaluable role in providing evaluation on the students' verified sense of responsibility throughout their service placements, and in any observed learning demonstrated by students. Community organization staff should also, ideally, be prepared to collaborate as a co-educator; for example, they may be invited by the faculty member to present in the classroom on relevant subject matter." [1]
NOTE: Community-based research projects may involve the Agency and faculty or a team of faculty. They may also involve faculty and students. The involvement of each depends on the nature of the project and the level of expertise required for the project.
In CHCP projects, community agency staff are responsible for:
- Clearly defining the agency need for the project and the outcomes expected.
- Designating a main agency Project Liaison who participates actively throughout the duration of the project. In cases where this individual leaves the project, another lead individual is appointed and oriented to the project.
- Assisting in establishing a Project Coordinating Team consisting of relevant representatives of the Agency and the College. In the case of small semester-length or less projects involving small numbers of students, the Coordinating Team will consist of the Project Liaison and the relevant College instructor.
- The Project Liaison will
- actively participate in the Project Coordinating Team and in discussions with CHCP staff and faculty involved in the project about agency needs, constraints, and issues that affect the project;
- Work with CHCP staff and College faculty to develop the Project Charter,(link) implementation plan and participate in the project implementation as required; or
- In the case of a small project, assist in the development of a Student/Agency Contract;(link)
- Be involved in the project evaluation.
- Providing orientation to college faculty and staff to the agency generally and more specifically to the agency components involved in the Project.
- Adhering to the Project Charter or negotiating changes with the Project Coordinating Team.
- Signing an Agreement for Student Practicum (link) unless the agency is already part of such an Agreement.
