Role and Responsibility of Faculty in CSL  Projects

"As part of a course or a co-curricular program, the faculty person has a very specific role as a lead educator. Responsible for design of the course or program, establishing learning goals and planning for evaluation of learning, faculty/staff also play a critical role in implementing reflection techniques to facilitate drawing meaning from the experience for the students, and in linking that experiential learning to other more formal academic learning sources within the curriculum or program. Faculty and/or staff also have a role to play in guiding students through the experiential component, in fostering a strong relationship with the community organization, and in exploring possibilities to involve staff from community organizations as co-educators. Finally, this role of lead educator in a community service-learning initiative, offers the opportunity to integrate the concepts of citizenship and social awareness within the academic content of the course." In CHCP projects, faculty are specifically responsible for:

  1. Including interdisciplinary CSL experiences in course Curriculum Guidelines.
  2. Providing CHCP with information regarding CSL projects that are being sought for students.
  3. Meeting with CHCP staff regarding potential projects that agencies have identified.
  4. If the project is possible, meeting with agency staff to discuss the project.
  5. Assisting in the development of the Project Charter.
  6. Acting as a member of the Project Coordinating Team and implement the project.
  7. Maintaining liaison with CHCP during the project. Maintain records of the project details.
  8. Participating  in the evaluation of the project and contributing to the final report to the CHCP and agency.



Role and Responsibility of Faculty in CBR Projects

Faculty may be involved with agencies in a researcher capacity, using their expertise to assist the agency in a CBR project. They may do so individually or with a group of faculty, with the logistics arranged by the CHCP. Faculty may also be involved in an instructional capacity, with one or a group of their students involved in the project. At times the roles of researcher and instructor are blended in some projects.

Faculty who are involving their students in CBR must ensure that they meet the CHCP criteria for involvement in CBR . These are articulated in the link to Criteria for Student Involvement in CBR Projects (link).

In CHCP projects, faculty are specifically responsible for:

  • In CBR Projects involving themselves individually, or a part of a faculty team, with no student involvement:
    • Providing CHCP with their interest in particular kinds of projects , their expertise an d availability, i.e., complete the Faculty CHCP Database form (link) and submit it;
    • Participating in the discussion with the agency about the project parameters and assisting as appropriate with the preparation of a grant proposal;
    • Negotiating and signing a Faculty/Agency contract (link to form) for small projects;
    • Participating in the development of the Project Charter (link to form) for larger projects;
    • Implementing the project with agency staff according to the contract or charter;
    • Maintaining contact with CHCP staff and records of the project;
    • Participating  in the evaluation of the project and contributing to the final report to the CHCP and agency.

 

  • In CBR Projects involving students:
    • Including interdisciplinary CBR experiences in course Curriculum Guidelines where appropriate;
    • Providing CHCP with information regarding CBR projects that are being sought for students;
    • Meeting with CHCP staff regarding potential projects that agencies have identified;
    • If the project is possible, meeting with agency staff to discuss the project;
    • Assisting in the development of the Project Charter;
    • Acting as a member of the Project Coordinating Team and implement the project;
    • Maintaining liaison with CHCP during the project. Maintain records of the project details;
    • Participating  in the evaluation of the project and contributing to the final report to the CHCP and agency.
