Establishing a Project

The Centre's focus is on activities that:

  • Have a community-college partnership
  • Have a health promotion, community service-learning or community-based research component
  • Have as an outcome health promotion/healthy communities
  • Have an interdisciplinary component

The Centre maintains a database of projects available and faculty who are interested in Community Service-Learning and/or Community Based research Projects. Faculty provide information to the CHCP regarding their interest using the CHCP Faculty Database Form (link).  When projects become available that match your information, you will be contacted.

The CHCP website advertises projects that are being sought and faculty who are seeking projects by interest/expertise area.  It also advertises projects that are available. Faculty names are not listed on the website without permission. See "Projects Needing Partners"

Community Service-Learning
It is important to include CSL in the Curriculum Guideline for your course and to let CHCP know in advance when specific experiences will be needed, as well as the numbers of students that require experience and whether an interdisciplinary experience is suitable.  This should be communicated using the attached form.

Community Based Research
Community-based Research projects may involve the agency and a faculty member or teams of faculty members OR involve faculty AND students. The nature of the project will determine the involvement,

Faculty may be involved with agencies in a researcher capacity, using their expertise to assist the agency in a CBR project. They may do so individually or with a group of faculty, with the logistics arranged by the CHCP.

Faculty may also be involved in an instructional capacity, with one or a group of their students involved in the project. At times the roles of researcher and instructor are blended in some projects.

Faculty who are interested in being involved in a CBR project within the CHCP in a researcher capacity should complete the   Faculty CHCP Database form (link) and submit it; your information will be entered into an internal CHCP database and as projects arise that match your interests, expertise and availability, you will be contacted.

Faculty who are interested in involving their students in an interdisciplinary CBR experience should also notify CHCP for inclusion in projects that may be available. Alternatively, you may have an idea for a project and a partner agency.  If so contact CHCP about this and we'll assist you in exploring and planning.  Contact: chcp@douglas.bc.ca or at 604 777 6501.
Note: Faculty who are involving their students in CBR must ensure that they meet the CHCP criteria for involvement in CBR . See Criteria for Student Involvement in CBR Projects.

Centre staff will:

  • talk with you about your project ideas their feasibility and help to determine/solicit participation by a specific agency or range of agencies;
  • review the Criteria for Inclusion of Students in CBR Projects and how you can modify your curriculum guidelines to include students and prepare them for the experience;
  • if it is appropriate, assist in the development of funding proposals that may be needed to support the project;
  • review your requirements and determine the available agency linkages;
  • connect you with agency staff for further planning of the project and assist in the development of either a Project Charter  or Agency/Faculty Contract that are required for every project undertaken by the Centre;
  • oversee the implementation  and evaluation of the project
